Since hearing the news surrounding David Jones, I've had so many thoughts running through my head, and honestly, it's been sitting quite heavily on my heart.
I think it's brought up a lot of emotion for me, not only because of my own time working in retail, but because of what these department stores have represented to so many of us over the years.
I spent over 7 years working at Myer, and I can honestly say that experience shaped so much of who I am today. It gave me a love for fashion, a passion for customer service and, more importantly, friendships and relationships that I still carry with me today.
Even years after leaving Myer and moving into completely different industries, I was often known as the “Myer girl” because I would never stop talking about the customer service, the experiences and the beautiful things that made working there so special.
Now, having my own little boutique, I often look back and realise just how much those years influenced the way I run my business and the experience I want every customer to have.
While Myer and David Jones are two different stores, they have both been such an important part of Australian retail and have created so many memories, opportunities and careers for generations of people.
That's why the uncertainty surrounding David Jones feels so significant. It's about so much more than a department store. It's about the people, the brands, the history and the experiences that have meant something to so many of us.
I don't think we should ever take that for granted.
I've shared a few more thoughts in the slides, because I think this is a conversation worth having, especially as we head into Christmas.
Please take a moment to read through. And wherever you can, support the people and businesses behind the places you love.
