Every year around this time, I hear the same sentence.
"We might have to go to Brisbane."
As though there is some unwritten rule that says a girl can't have her special night unless mum drives for hours, pays for accommodation, eats takeaway, spends all day in shopping centres and comes home thousands of dollars lighter.
And honestly?
I think we've accidentally made prom harder than it needs to be.
Not every family has endless money.
Not every mum is part of a couple.
Not every household can casually drop $2,500 on one evening.
And that doesn't mean a daughter deserves any less magic.
Sometimes the perfect dress is found close to home.
Sometimes the most beautiful memories aren't attached to a price tag.
Sometimes the dress that makes a girl stand a little taller and smile a little bigger costs under $800.
Sometimes it's under $500.
Sometimes, it's a marketplace dress that needs a little reworking.
And no, that doesn't make it "cheap."
It makes it sensible.
Because the truth is, nobody remembers what mum paid.
They remember how she looked when she walked down the stairs.
They remember the photos.
They remember the excitement.
They remember feeling beautiful.
That's what prom is supposed to be.
Not stress.
Not debt.
Not pressure.
Just a girl, feeling like herself, on a night she'll remember forever.
And if staying local means keeping a little more money in mum's pocket while still finding something beautiful…
I think that's worth celebrating.
