Some of our yarns begin with the fleece of just one animal. 🦙🐑

Not every yarn we make, of course, but for some of our special blends and limited editions, that’s quite literally where it starts.

One animal’s fleece can only go so far. Sometimes we save fleeces for a couple of years so we have enough fibre to make a slightly bigger batch. And sometimes, when that fibre is gone, we simply can’t make the same yarn again.

That’s part of what makes these yarns special to us. Each fleece has its own colour, character and qualities, and we love finding ways to bring those natural differences to life in a finished yarn.

There’s another reason this matters to us, too.

In a world where so much is produced in huge quantities and so much goes to waste, we think it’s worth remembering where natural fibres come from. Wool and alpaca fibre don’t appear in a factory. They grow on animals, fleece by fleece, season by season.

We want to make thoughtful use of the fibre we have, rather than treating it as an endless resource. Sometimes that means making a small batch, sometimes it means waiting until we have enough, and sometimes it means accepting that a particular yarn won’t be repeated.

It’s a different way of working, and it may not always be the quickest or easiest. But it feels right for our little mill. 🤍

And if you’ve ever bought one of our limited-edition yarns, you’re helping us make the most of those special fleeces, too.

Sometimes, the best yarns start with a little leftover fibre… 🌿🧶

After our last Yarn Making Masterclass, we had some fibre left over. Rather than let it sit in a box, we decided to turn it into something special.

And so, Ghost Gum Light was born! 🤍

It’s a new, limited-edition yarn that we’ll be releasing this Saturday at She's Crafty - Yarn Lovers' Market in Castlemaine.

And it will go live online on our website after 3pm on Saturday 😉

And you know what limited edition means here at GOR Woollen Mill… once this batch is gone, that’s it! We don’t have any more of the same fibre to make an identical batch.

So, if Ghost Gum Light catches your eye and you have a project in mind, make sure you pick up enough for the whole thing. We’d hate for you to run short halfway through! 😉

Never underestimate the power of a good block! 🧶🤍

Blocking is one of those steps that can make a real difference to a knitted garment — and particularly when you’re machine knitting. (Blocked rib in the right)

When the pieces first come off the machine, they can look a little different from how you imagined the finished garment. The fabric may curl, the edges might not sit quite as you’d like, and the dimensions can need a little adjustment.

Blocking helps the knitted fabric relax and settle into shape, making it easier to work with when it comes to joining everything together.

It’s especially important for things like ribbing, where you want the edges to sit neatly and the finished garment to look balanced.

For my La Bella 4ply vest, blocking the main pieces and the ribbing was an important step before linking everything together.

It doesn’t magically fix everything (if only! 😂), but it can make a remarkable difference to the finished result.

And a little reminder: always check the care requirements of your yarn before choosing your blocking method. Different fibres respond differently to water, heat and handling.

We’re busy getting ready for Castlemaine, and there are some rather special yarns coming along for the ride!

🧶 Yarns made during our Yarn Making Masterclasses — each with its own story, and only a limited amount available.

🌿 And something completely new… Ghost Gum Light! We haven’t told you about this one yet. 😉

Of course, we’ll also have our usual GOR favourites with us, so there’ll be plenty to browse, squish and dream about your next project with.

Some familiar faces, a few rare finds, and one little secret we’re finally ready to share… well, almost! 😄

From knitted pieces to a finished vest. 🧶🤍

Remember my machine-knitting experiments with our La Bella 4ply in Mid Grey? Well, the vest is finished! Yay 🥳

Once the pieces were knitted, there was still quite a bit to do before it could be worn.

First, blocking — giving the main pieces and the ribbing a little attention so everything settles into shape. Then came the linking, joining the pieces together to turn them into an actual garment.

And finally… a vest!

I designed this one myself and worked out the calculations along the way, so it’s been a satisfying little project from the first swatches to the last seam.

I’m still learning my way around machine knitting, and I love discovering what’s possible with our own yarns. It’s also a lovely reminder that making a garment is about more than the knitting itself. Those finishing steps really do make a difference.

And I think La Bella 4ply in Mid Grey has worked rather well for this one. 🤍

Now, the question is… what shall I make next? 😉

A knitting machine… but make it look hand-knitted. 🧶😉

I’ve been experimenting with machine knitting, using our La Bella 4ply in Mid Grey to make a vest.

One of the things I wanted to explore was how to create a fabric with a softer, more relaxed look, rather than the very uniform appearance people sometimes associate with machine knitting.

And that’s where the swatching comes in.

A swatch isn’t just about checking your tension or making sure your garment will fit. It’s also an opportunity to experiment with the fabric itself: how loosely or firmly it’s knitted, how it drapes, and how it feels in your hands.

A few small adjustments can make quite a difference to the finished result.

There’s been a fair bit of experimenting along the way, but I’ve now moved on from the swatches and started making the vest itself. I designed it and worked out the calculations, so there’s been plenty to think about before even getting started!

And that’s one of the things I enjoy about making: finding ways to turn an idea into something wearable, with a little trial and error along the way. (And yes, quite a few swatches! 😂)
