Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social interaction, communication, and behaviour. It affects individuals uniquely, with a wide range of strengths and challenges. In Australia, it’s estimated that more than 205,000 Australians are autistic, and 1 in 4 Australians have a family member on the autism spectrum.
World Autism Awareness Day is observed annually on 2 April. In 2025, this day falls on a Wednesday. April is also recognised as Autism Month in Australia, dedicated to raising awareness, acceptance, and inclusion of autism.
Recently, the Australian government announced a $42 million investment in a national autism strategy aimed at improving the lives of autistic Australians until 2031. The strategy focuses on peer support, community awareness, and scientific research, with nearly $20 million allocated over four years for peer support, $915,000 for autism awareness and education, and $12.2 million over five years for research on neurodiversity.
