We want to introduce you to someone.

She’s one of the women in our Bloom After Dark series. A real woman who has been part of the Akoya journey, and who has also walked the path of breast cancer. Nikki agreed to share her story in her own words.

Wife. Mum. Co-founder of a charity. A Westfield Local Hero nominee. And a breast cancer survivor.

We asked her some questions. What she sent back was honest, generous and so relatable.

We don’t want to give too much away here. It deserves to be read in full.

Wednesday. Watch your inbox if you’re part of the Inner Circle.

These are Chelle’s breast care nurses. They’ve walked beside her since day one, almost two years ago now, and they still do.

It’s part of why this program means so much to us.

It didn’t start with a plan. Someone messaged and asked if they could buy a pair of pyjamas for a stranger going through a hard time. We said yes before we’d worked out how it would actually work.

That yes has since turned into 20 women receiving a set of pyjamas, paid for entirely by someone they will never meet.

No campaign behind it. No spotlight sought. Just people in this community deciding a stranger’s hard season was worth softening.

Because every woman going through something hard deserves to feel soft.

Interested in being that thoughtful stranger for a woman walking a tough path? Comment PEARL and we’ll be in touch.

I promised myself I’d show up here on July 24th.

I didn’t.

Not because I forgot. Because for once, I wanted the day to be mine before it became a post. So I stepped away from the caption and just lived it. Celebrated it. Let it be joyful instead of heavy, for the first time in two years.

This letter is something I shared with those subscribed to our mailing list, but it feels right to share it here also.

It’s not really a caption. It’s everything I’ve needed someone to say to me since July 24, 2024. So I said it to myself.

And I can finally add three words that hold so much weight.

NED. No Evidence of Disease.

Not cured. Not finished. But here, and whole enough to keep going.

If you’re in the middle of your own version of this, wherever you are in it, I hope this finds you exactly when you need it.

You are not who you were. And that is ok. Thank you for staying.

Every winter I fought my body. And every winter my body won.

The wanting to sleep earlier. The longer nights. The guilt about needing more rest than I thought I was supposed to.

What I know now, your body is not failing you in winter. It is responding to its environment exactly the way it was built to.

Melatonin production shifts earlier as the days shorten. Your circadian rhythm genuinely changes. And your core temperature wants to drop more deeply during sleep, which means if what you are wearing traps heat, your body is working against itself all night.

I think about this every time I hear a woman apologise for needing more rest when it gets cold.

What is your winter sleep actually like? I would love to know.

Something personal is coming on the 24th of this month.

I talk about the origin of Akoya often, not the full version of it though.

Parts of the story have been kept close because some things feel too significant to share carelessly.

Thursday the 24th is two years and I have been reflecting a lot over the last few months. I have decided it is time to say the things I have been sitting with.

I will be here on the 24th.

If you would like to be part of that conversation, follow along and for the in depth version make sure you are subscribed to our mailing list.

The response to our fundraiser announcement has genuinely moved me.

The messages, the shares, the women reaching out to say they want to be in that room.

This is exactly the community I hoped Akoya would build.

Not the First, Not the Last is on the 10th of October at the Pullman King George Square in Brisbane. Two hundred guests. High tea. Every dollar raised goes toward supporting Mater Chicks in Pink, who support breast cancer patients in practical ways as well as funding vital research.

If you would like to be there a link to tickets are in the first comment or comment TICKET and we will send you the link.

If you cannot come but want to support, I will share more about how you can do that closer to the day.

Thank you for being the kind of community that shows up for something 🤎

Can I ask you something honestly?

When was the last time you bought something for yourself, not for the house, not for someone else, not because you needed it. Just because you wanted it and you were allowed?

I ask because the women I talk to have extraordinary taste on behalf of everyone else in their lives. Their families. Their friends. Their homes. And then they get to themselves and they pause.

I built Akoya for that pause. I lived in it long enough to understand it.

You do not need an occasion. You do not need to have earned it. You just need to decide it is your turn.

When did you last do something just for you?

Tell me in the comments.

Get your people together. This one is going to be something you do not want to miss.

On Saturday 10 October, Akoya is hosting Not the First, Not the Last — a Chicks in Pink fundraiser high tea for the Mater Foundation’s breast cancer support and research.

2pm to 5pm at the Pullman King George Square, Brisbane.

Champagne on arrival. Decadent high tea. Live illustrator . Guest speaker panel. Enormous raffle. Luxury silent auction. Best dressed prizes. 200 people. One extraordinary afternoon.

Every dollar raised goes to the Mater Foundation and the fight against breast cancer.

I went through this. I built Akoya from it. And this is how I give something back — with the most incredible room full of humans I can possibly put together.

Tickets are live now — link in the first comment.

Were you there last year? Are you coming this year?

Like, share, tag someone who needs to be in that room 🤍

Six months ago I launched Akoya with a lot of hope and absolutely no idea what was coming.

In the reel I shared what I could, the stock arriving, trying retail and walking away from it, the Pay It Forward program gifting 13 women in six months, selling out and reordering twice.

What I didn’t get to mention was the Mater Foundation IWD fun run, showing up with a little stall and meeting some of the most remarkable women. Collaborating on a shoot with WFML and some genuinely incredible vendors. And being written up by Central West Mums, which honestly stopped me in my tracks.

None of this is what I mapped out. All of it is better.

Thank you for being part of the first six months. There’s a lot more coming.

Chelle 🤍
