Shop Online Today At www.lakeleather.com.au Lake Leather was a family business started by my mother and father Meg and Barry Lake on the dining room table in 1972. I would often arrive home from school and the table would be covered in cut out handbags, and my mother hand decorating pieces with leather carving and pattern stamping. Stories abound such as the time a saleswoman knocked on the door

selling encyclopedia books. She left with no sale, but having ordered 2000 hand carved keycases instead. Pocket money was earnt making small leather items such as wide leather wristbands for watches, initialled key rings and disco bags.

GEAR UP LIKE YOU’RE HEADED SOUTH.

Heavy-duty leather. Warm gloves. Sturdy footwear. Bags made to be thrown in the back of the car and taken somewhere interesting.

You may only be going to Campbell Town.

But nobody needs to know that. Read our latest edit in the Journal ( link in bio)

Winter is apparently on its way out.

Tasmania, naturally, has yet to confirm this.

Still, the seasons must move along, which means a rather lovely selection of our winter shoes & boots is now on sale.

They’re the same pairs we chose because we liked the leather, the construction and the idea that you might wear them for many winters to come.

Because a good pair of shoes shouldn’t be a one-season affair.

They just happen to have a smaller price tag now.

And frankly, we suspect there’s plenty of boot weather left yet.

The best bits of the buying fair? Not entirely the buying.

It’s getting our Lake Leather people together. A few days away from our respective corners of Tasmania, catching up, comparing notes, trying on far too many shoes and having rather strong opinions about handbags.

There’s plenty of looking, choosing and thinking about what might earn a place in our stores next season. But there’s also plenty of laughing.

We’re rather lucky with this little Lake Leather community of ours. 🤎

Meanwhile, shopping up a storm …

We’re currently choosing what’s coming to Lake Leather next season, and the boss is talking us through one of Django & Juliette’s rather clever heel designs.

Apparently there’s quite a bit of engineering involved in a good heel.

Who knew shoe buying could get so technical? 👠

There are some things Tasmania does particularly well.

Cold mornings. Wild weather. Very good leather.

And, as it happens, a rather excellent dram.

With Tasmanian Whisky Week upon us, we’ve been thinking about the things that get better with age. Good whisky, beautiful leather, and perhaps a few of us, given flattering enough light.

Our latest journal is a small celebration of all three.

A Dram Deserves Good Leather.

There’s also a little something for those beginning to think about Father’s Day. Entirely too early, obviously. Which is precisely why it’s probably sensible.

Have a read when you’ve a moment ( link in bio). Preferably with something decent in your glass. tasmanian.whisky.week

Some things don’t need reinventing.

A heritage building. A well-made leather bag. A quiet walk through the countryside with nowhere in particular to be.

This week we’ve been thinking about stories that continue rather than start over. About old buildings finding a new purpose, and leather that’s made to gather memories instead of gathering dust.

Funny how the best things seem to improve with time.

If you haven’t read this week’s Journal yet, pop the kettle on, and grab a bite kittens. It’s a lovely little read.

Right.

Who’s been pretending they don’t need another pair?

This is your official permission to stop being so terribly responsible. Our sale is on, the good ones are going quickly, and life’s simply too short to spend it in boring shoes.

Go on then. Your feet have been asking. Shop In-Store or Online before they’re gone.

Some buildings have lived a few lives.

Ours has seen a fair bit over the years. Long before leather bags lined the shelves, the building was home to Elderfield Wood Butchery, where generations of Evandale locals wandered in for the evening roast and, quite possibly, a little gossip while they were there.

We rather like the idea that the building is still doing what it has always done best... welcoming people through the front door.

We've shared its story in this week's Journal. Pop the kettle on, kittens. It's a lovely read.

There are buildings that simply exist. Then there are buildings that become part of a town. Our Evandale store falls rather firmly into the second category. Long before there were leather bags lining the shelves and customers debating whether chestnut or black would suit their wardrobe better, this....

If getting dressed requires trying on seven different outfits, perhaps everyone’s expectations have become entirely unreasonable.
