Did you know stencils are more than just tracing?

In the Montessori classroom, children between the ages of 3-5, often use stencils for developing hand control and for learning the movements required for writing.

Stencils also engage bilateral coordination, which means both sides of the body are required to work together.
Our boards are designed so the hand is forced to lift where normal lift occurs in handwriting. They give practice forming correct letter contours (arrows cue writing direction), coordination of eye-hand movements, and development of standard stroke patterns.

Dear Mums and Dads

I know it was hard dropping off your little ones (and even your not-so-little ones) on their first day of school today.

Of course, in these first few days, separation anxiety gets the best of some children (and some of us parents, too). It’s absolutely normal and to be expected.

As a Mum of 3, I've found there are 3 things that can help make the transition easier on everyone.

1. Always involve your little one in packing their bag and getting their uniform ready for the next day.

2. Let your little one feel more in control by letting them choose their breakfasts and lunches each day, how they want to wear their hair etc.

3. And lastly, let your child feel connected to you whilst they're at school. I love giving them a kiss in their pocket that they can take out whenever they need. I also love drawing faces on their oranges and leaving little love notes in their lunchboxes.

Transitions are a naturally challenging part of life, and compassion is key as we move through them. These moments are opportunities to guide your children with understanding and help them build resilience.

When everyone is tired, and things don’t work out as planned, remember that your child is watching how you cope, too. Give yourself and your family a little more time for tasks and plenty of rest over the coming months.

Good luck this year, Mums and Dads.

Pretend play with your child can help them:

• learn about playing with others
• imagine what it’s like to be another person – which is important for developing empathy
• have fun and have lots to talk about
• make stories come alive by acting out the characters.

Some of the most important resources to encourage your little ones to pretend play are dolls, kitchen utensils, play silks and dress ups. Check out our Pretend Play range now.
