🥚 Why we’re loving Rollaway Nesting Boxes!

We’ve started incorporating rollaway nesting boxes into our chicken coops, and there are some very practical reasons why.

✨ Cleaner eggs – once laid, the eggs gently roll away from the nesting area, helping keep them clean and protected.

🐔 Less roosting in the nesting boxes – the design discourages hens from sleeping in them, which means far less mess.

🧼 Easy to clean – no timber nesting area soaking up moisture or odours. They’re simple to wipe or hose out when needed.

🌾 No bedding required – the nesting surface is designed to be used without constantly topping up straw or shavings.

🥚 Fewer broken eggs – eggs roll safely away from the hens after laying.

🐓 Helps prevent egg eating – because the eggs roll into the protected collection area where the hens can’t easily access them.

🐣 May help discourage broodiness – hens don’t have the same cosy, bedding-filled nest full of eggs to settle onto.

A little look at our poultry setup 🐔

One of the best things we’ve added is a 200L water drum that supplies water to both of our chicken coops.

We get some pretty brutal summers here — temperatures can reach 48°C — and I’ve been really impressed with how well this setup works. The water stays clean, doesn’t seem to go slimy or green, and having such a large supply means we’re not constantly topping up drinkers.

It’s also great peace of mind if we’re away for a few days (or even a couple of weeks), knowing the chickens have a good supply of water.

It was a relatively cheap and simple setup too, so I thought I’d share a little video in case anyone else with a larger flock is looking for ideas.

Happy to take some closer photos of how we’ve connected everything if anyone wants to see it. 😊🐓
