The recent SMH article about corporate chain optometrists is stirring up opinions about ethics in healthcare businesses.

Healthcare, specifically optometry, should prioritise patient outcomes. This is certainly easier to achieve as an independent optometrist.

Man: "Mum keeps misplacing stuff. She says she can see, but her last eye check was years ago. The doctor is thinking dementia as well."

Almost half a million Aussies currently live with dementia, with around 100,000 unpaid carers providing support, mostly women. Dementia is projected to increase to more than 1 million by 2065.

One key risk factor in dementia development is untreated vision loss later in life (2024 Lancet Commision update). Regular eye check-ups are imperative for everyone aged 65 and over, every 12mths. The health of an aging eye can alter in a 12mth period due to cataracts, macular diseases, eye pressure changes and inflammatory diseases. These all need monitoring as treatment is more successful in the early stage of any disease. But it is important to address the resultant blurred vision as it happens, before it impacts one's ability to connect and communicate with their world.

If you or a loved one has concerns about these issues, contact me at On Point Optical to address them or book an appointment on 02 72626673. I have decades of experience managing senior patients and treat them with the utmost compassion and thoroughness.

We also have a visiting dietician, Jenny Livanos, who provides holistic therapy for eye conditions including cataracts, macular disease and glaucoma. Book Jenny at naturaleyecare.com.au

Woman: “I am six months pregnant and I feel like my eyes are going blurry. What’s happening?"

This exciting part of your life can cause some vision concerns.
Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can cause temporary refractive changes. This is caused by increased fluid retention which subtly alters the thickness and curvature of the cornea. This can result in blurred vision, difficulty focusing, or changes in contact lens tolerance—especially in the second and third trimesters. Dry eyes are common as changing hormone levels affect the tear surface thickness and quality.
Most vision changes are mild and harmless, resolving after delivery. However, sudden blurriness, double vision, light sensitivity, or seeing flashes and floaters can signal serious conditions like preeclampsia. These symptoms—particularly when paired with severe headaches or high blood pressure—require immediate evaluation by a healthcare provider.
If you're pregnant and concerned about changes to your vision, book an appointment with me, online www.onpointoptical.com.au or call 0272626673. 😎
