This exciting part of your life can cause some vision concerns.
Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can cause temporary refractive changes. This is caused by increased fluid retention which subtly alters the thickness and curvature of the cornea. This can result in blurred vision, difficulty focusing, or changes in contact lens tolerance—especially in the second and third trimesters. Dry eyes are common as changing hormone levels affect the tear surface thickness and quality.
Most vision changes are mild and harmless, resolving after delivery. However, sudden blurriness, double vision, light sensitivity, or seeing flashes and floaters can signal serious conditions like preeclampsia. These symptoms—particularly when paired with severe headaches or high blood pressure—require immediate evaluation by a healthcare provider.

Mum: my 8yr old kid is constantly disruptive in the classroom, has poor concentration and hates reading - avoids it. How can this be related to eyes?

Answer: It is common for kids with poor concentration, disruptive behaviour in class, and reading avoidance to have an
-eye muscle coordination problem ie: both eyes don't work together well
OR
-refractive error ie: long-sighted, short-sighted, astigmatism, which makes things look blurry and harder to focus on.
Both these reasons make it hard for kids to keep their eyes and attention on one task (usually books/screens) for very long without being uncomfortable - so they avoid it. If they can't do something, it manifests as a behaviour issue.
In every eye exam I conduct on a child, I check:
-far & close vision
-refractive error: are they long/short-sighted, astigmatism?
-eye-teaming strength: how well do their eyes work together?
-near focus challenge: how well do they cope when they focus for a long time?
-front & back of eye looks healthy?

I have a special interest in kids' vision, and over twenty years in clinical eyecare for all ages. (Plus I raise a 7 yr old...)
If they do need glasses, I offer two pairs for one - as it's no surprises with kids breaking or losing things, including glasses.
