According to science journal online It has been calculated that over one year, the amount of non-recyclable plastic mask waste generated in the UK will be equivalent to five-and-a-half Eiffel Towers. This is seriously problematic because, notwithstanding the immediate health danger they pose, non-reusable masks are made out of plastics like polypropylene which takes around 450 years to biodegrade.
Follow these tips for reusable masks and traduce your impact on the environment
1. Machine wash masks regularly following the instructions for the fabric.
2. Try to carry a spare so if something goes wrong with the one you’re wearing you don’t need to use or buy a disposable mask.
3. If you do need to use a disposable mask, take it home (maybe in a bag if you have to take it off) and then put it straight into a bin with a lid. If this isn’t possible, place it in a proper public bin.
4. Don’t put disposable masks in the recycling. They can get caught in specialist recycling equipment and be a potential biohazard to waste workers

A day to appreciate and celebrate our natural world. But we cannot ignore the disaster that is happening right now in our ocean.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, salvage experts tried to tow the X-Press Pearl into deeper water to minimise the pollution risk to the coastline. But the back section hit the seabed and the operation was abandoned.

We asked you when and where you first heard about this disaster in Sri Lanka. 94% of you only heard about this in the last 48 hours and 89% of you heard it first from our social media post. This event took place on May 20.

This is not ok. And over 2 weeks later, how many of you have still not heard about this environmental catastrophe until now?�
We need to make a change. We need to EDUCATE people about the plastic pollution crisis. We need to take ACTION. We need to PROTECT our vulnerable ocean.
