In this video we’re out prawning land-based in the Brisbane River chasing another cracking feed of prawns but this time, I’ve brought a mate along for the action!
This time of year is absolute prime time. With the prawns moving and abundant in the river system, the big predators are on the hunt. It’s the perfect excuse to throw a line out and let it soak while you gather the bait. You’ve got a massive chance of hooking into Jewfish, flatties, tailor, threadfin, grunter, or a nice squire.
Talk about a bonus night! Not only did we get into the prawns but the rods came alive too. I managed to land a Jewfish it was just undersized, so it swam away to fight another day and backed it up with a beautiful, keeper sized flathead! It’s been a while since I’ve had a feed of fresh flattie, so that’s dinner sorted. Nothing beats prawning and catching a quality feed of fish all at once! 🍤🎣

Brisbane River Prawn Report
Action: Working the last of the low tide through the initial run-in...
The transition from the bottom of the tide to the push back in is prime time on the river right now. As the water bottomed out, the schools were likely concentrated in the deeper holes and channel edges. Once that tide turned and started running back in, the prawns began their move, pushing along the ledges and back toward the mouth.
If you were out there last night, you timed it perfectly to catch them while they were bundled up and stationary. The current river clarity is sitting just right—murky enough to keep them from being flighty, but clean enough to find the thick of the school.
Quick Recap
Target Zone: Main channel pockets on the low; structure and ledges on the run-in.
Top Spots: Reports are strong around Doboy Creek, the Gateway, Breakfast Creek, and the Port reaches, with plenty of "Banana" prawns showing good size.
Pro Tip: Keep an eye on the flickers near the mudbanks as that water rises—they’ll be moving fast with the incoming salt. Burley is a must if you want to cast less and catch more.
Rule of Thumb: High tide go deeper, low tide go shallow.
Good luck and happy prawning guys!! 🦐🦐
