“The untamed south face of Cradle Mountain hides many precipitous ski descents, rarely seen and almost never explored. For several years I’d been theorising potential descents from the summit that included the spectacular south couloir, arguably one of Australia’s most impressive terrain features. After studying old images and local ultralight pilot videos I’d planned a possible route, but due to fickle snow conditions it was several years before I’d be able to make an attempt.

Early September this year, large snowfalls appeared on the charts and we made our way along the jagged spine of the mountain not knowing what to expect. Beneath our skis was an unlikely route that compelled further exploration. Down the south face we went, via a series of steep gullies and several narrow downclimbs about a metre wide. It was exhilarating skiing with angles broaching fifty degrees and quality snow. Eventually we entered the main couloir which we’d skied several times prior. The hallway ran dead straight for several hundred meters filled with slough deposits from the south face and out into the primordial birch rainforest below. A total descent of some 400 vertical metres.

To me the route epitomised Tasmanian skiing; wildly spectacular, unpredictable and steep. All the hallmarks of a great adventure!” -

Last winter, our very own Ben Armstrong from the Find Your Feet Hobart store teamed up with Shaun Mittwollen for a mission few would ever attempt.

A ski descent of Tasmania’s iconic Cradle Mountain.

After years of watching conditions, studying lines and waiting for the right window, they linked together a route down the mountain’s imposing face, navigating narrow downclimbs, steep terrain and one of Australia’s most striking couloirs.
