The Mermaid’s Lament
OCEAN ART EXHIBITION Friday 14th August
Hopetoun CRC Marine Debris Category
A haunting celebration of the ocean—and a warning from the sea.
The Mermaid’s Lament is a sculptural textile artwork created from discarded marine plastics and ocean waste. Through stitching, weaving and textile construction, these discarded materials are transformed into the form of a mermaid, symbolising the beauty of our oceans and the growing threat posed by plastic pollution.
The mermaid represents the voice of the ocean—a reminder that what we discard on land can ultimately become part of her world. Her tangled form reflects the entanglement of marine life in plastic waste, while the act of transforming rubbish into art offers a message of hope, creativity and responsibility.
She is beautiful. She is vulnerable. And she is asking us to listen.
The Mermaid’s Lament — a voice for an ocean drowning in plastic.
