These genuine Rwandan baskets are hand crafted by local village women to assist them in paying for various medical needs and give their children the opportunity of education as employment is scarce.
Igiseke baskets are made from stripping fibrous materials from trees and wrapping around bound grasses. Fibres and grasses are soaked in water for quite some time before construction, this allows for shaping and construction of the baskets.
Inkangara is made with a foundation of bamboo, which has water reed type grasses weaved and coloured with natural dyes as the external feature. The bottom of these baskets are rounded.
*Baskets have come through the Australian Customs process and are completely within regulation.*
The process is laborious and time-consuming, which is why they are only purchased under fair trade agreement. The skill of making these baskets is passed down from generation to generation. As each basket is hand crafted, no 2 are exactly the same, the base and lid have corresponding handwritten numbers inside them to ensure the tightly fitted lids are placed back onto the correct bases.
The Igiseke basket is customarily used by villages to fill with items/gifts for newly wed couples to assist them in the beginning of their wedded life, hence the need to number lids and bases. The baskets are made with love and the best intentions as they serve an important purpose. Much dancing and singing occurs when the baskets full of gifts are presented.
