Mother Nature fills my cup on a daily basis. I like to start my day communing with her before distractions take hold. I breathe deeply and slowly.
Sometimes she takes my breath away, like when I stumble across beauty like this incredible tree. It looks and smells even more spectacular after the rain.
I'm very happy that we chose to build a home in this lovely area that's the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people.

I started my career in fashion working
for brands that produced their product locally. I loved the hands on aspect of local production, the ability to work in person with suppliers and makers, to problem solve at the drop of a hat when issues arose in production. So it was a delight and a privilege to participate in the Ethical Manufacturers Tour hosted by Ethical Clothing Australia today.

A bus load visited 3 local manufacturers that are ECA accredited. Thanks to the team - Georgia, Brighid Donovan and Mary for organising it all.

We started our tour at State in Thornbury, thanks Chloe, next onto Wilderness Wear in Preston, thanks John and finally to Humphrey Law in Heathmont, thanks Rio and Skye. All have their time and shared knowledge generously.

The tour was educational, from both how hard it is to continue making locally from the perspective of skill gaps, but it was great to see in action, how small businesses can pivot, improve with niche market technology and make a unique selling point to challenge big corporations.

Thanks again Ethical Clothing Australia

Day 1 of my short residency at the Mungga Artists in ILCH as part of Textile Art Community Art Space take over.
I had big plans for the day with headspace to think and just be at the top of that list.

Retaining value in existing resources is a major part of my textile practice and something that I hold dear. I search out yarn that others discard, unravel knitted garments, dead stock and sadly my own 'good yarn' stash sometimes when mites manage to attack it. I didn't get to clean out my studio fully over summer and mites love dark, dusty places.

My aim today is to work out a few ideas that have been having around my mind. I often visualise the end result first but never just knit something. I need the story. This is where sampling, sketching and design development comes and the tale reveals itself.

Watch this space....you might have to be patient....

Thanks to the amazing Banyule Arts and Culture team for meeting this possible.

Back in the studio.
I've been very easily distracted of late. Loving this late autumn weather, it's when I'm my most creative and productive.
I like to get down on the ground quite a lot when I'm planning, testing and sampling.
I had many fallen leaves sweeping in to keep me company 🍂 while I work.

As the final week approaches, I am taking the time to reflect on what this piece means to me.

I have come to realise that emotions in various states pop up in my work. I haven't stepped back enough to realise that they are a recurring theme in my work. in recent years, adding depth and feeling to my work.

This piece, a significant step away from my usual knitted finished pieces, is more about how I could express through the yarn itself, the emotions and thoughts I was feeling at the time.
“Weight of the World” represents the burden of textile waste I have carried with me throughout my career in the fashion industry. It also represents self-expression and liberation that can be found in searching for renewed value and continued purpose of textiles and fibre.

Although the colours and implied weight of the yarn used to create “Weight of the World”, there is also a sense of calm and serenity garnered as a breeze or air passes over the fibres and light catches a glistening shimmer from the white Tencel roving fibre.

The wool used in the piece is a salvaged warp from a loom that was being discarded. The yarn was moth damaged so not fit my usual method of creation – machine knitting. The 'shoulders' was a walking stick I claimed on a bush bash ramble during lockdown, searching for a trail I hadn't walked a 1hundred times before.
The only new element of the work is the glistening white roving is Tencel, a sustainable fibre, that in this piece represents renewed hope for the future.

Thank you Tamara for yet another beautifully curated exhibition of textile art.

It was a full house for the opening evening of Thread - Tangles/detangles. It runs until 6th April. There are many workshops by artists running throughout the exhibition period.

What can I say, there were so many stand out pieces. Tonight it seems that I was particularly drawn to stitch and woven artwork. Special shout out to some of my favourites.
incredible tea cup tapestry made from hand dyed tea bag strings and paper tags,

embroidered handkerchiefs, brightly coloured statement pieces, incredible animal embroidery portraits,

I am honoured to be included in upcoming Thread - tangles / detangles Exhibition

You are invited. Come visit between
14 March – 6 April 2025 at the Glen Eira City Gallery – Corner Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads, Caulfield.

Thread – Tangles / detangles explores tangible and intangible connections, processes and techniques. Transformed through knitting, weaving, looping and stitching, threads carry significant personal and cultural narratives. The exhibition aims to encourage viewers to rethink their relationship to thread, be aware of its materiality, its possibilities and limitations.

Thread, surrounds us and accompanies us from birth until the day we die. It’s like a second skin. Yet because of these close connections, it becomes almost invisible. Despite an upsurge in interest in craft and making, textiles are still almost invisible in the world of art. Rooted in craft techniques, work made with thread is generally seen as ‘women’s work’, overlooked or disregarded by the contemporary art scene. This exhibition aims to change this view.

The exhibition is curated by Tamara Russell

This was my childhood!! I used to get so excited when a mystery bag of clothes would arrive in the house from neighbours or relatives. I would try everything on, even if it was miles too big for me. I loved the stories that might be attached to some of the garments, who wore them and the places they had been to. That progressed to my love of vintage so as a teenager my first and only stop from clothes were second hand or vintage shops.
This was before great fashion. What you could find there was pure gold. Some of them made there way with me across the world..I still have them 30+ yes on.

What a beautiful day.
I got to spend 2 hrs sharing information about my sustainable textile art practice. They discovered the ethos behind my approach to generating new 'things' and how the process returns value to raw materials.

During the workshop they learned how to salvage yarn from an existing garment and how to prepare the yarn for re-use and give back value to it as a resource.

The workshop was held at my home studio in Rosanna on Wurundjeri land.

The workshops and talks are have been made possible due to a community grant from and are an extension of the weekend.
