Fifteen swatches later, the residency is done.

A month ago I said yes to an artist residency at SHOP GAL , not knowing exactly what I would make of the time, only that I needed it. The Undone Work became a month of machine knitting research with no product agenda. Just technique, time, and curiosity.

A little recap from last week’s scrunchie workshop at .gal

A cosy group of first time machine knitters, a glass of champagne, and a room full of good energy on Johnston Street, Fitzroy. Everyone left with a handcrafted scrunchie made entirely by themselves, from scratch, for the first time.

There is something really special about watching someone use a knitting machine for the very first time and walk away genuinely proud of what they made.

Week two of The Undone Work and I am still learning how to knit without knowing where I am going.

Four years out of a creative rhythm and the hardest part has not been the technique. It has been switching off the production brain and just making. No product agenda. No customer in mind. Just the machine, the yarn, and the process.

The swatches are starting to tell their own story. The wall is growing.

This weekend’s beanie workshop at Thread Den was something special, a sold-out room of brand new knitters moving through techniques, building swatches, and slowly finding their confidence at the machine. For most, it was their very first time. And they were brilliant!

There is something quietly beautiful about watching someone discover a new craft. The focus, the small victories, the moment a stitch finally does what it’s supposed to.

This is where every beanie begins.
