"Not all car seats are suitable for babies under 3-3.5kg." - Kidsafe
You might be reading this and a little surprised; 2,500 to 4,499 grams is generally considered a 'normal' weight range, with the average baby weighing 3328 grams in Australia (2019).
It just shows the importance of checking your little one is safe in their carseat - this guide may be a 'low-birth weight' baby check guide, but even if your baby is at the 3.5kg mark, their seat may not be safe for them!
How can I check that my baby is safe in their car seat?
👉🏼 The crotch buckle should be low on the baby's pelvis (not high toward their chest/neck).
👉🏼 The crotch buckle should be supporting the pelvis and not sitting away from the crotch.
👉🏼 The harness should be sitting level or slightly above baby's shoulders - not below or too high.
👉🏼 The harness should be close to and running snug against babies hips - not crossing up to the stomach or over baby's thighs.
👉🏼 The harness needs to be tight - you can check this with the following;

Two-finger test - you should only be able to fir two flat fingers at most, between the harness and child.
Always check whether you can retighten by readjusting the harness at the back of the restraint, to remove any slack.
Further to this, in 2020, Kidsafe and Neura released an updated 'Best Practice Guidelines for the Safe Restraint of Children Travelling in Motor Vehicles'. This included the recommendation that children who are under 2.5kg use a seat designed specifically for them.
