After a long recruitment process, we’re proud to introduce Anthony as the newest member of the Stanmore 4WD.

Anthony will now be taking 47% of all workshop profits while contributing a strong background in making everything more expensive and significantly more complicated than it needs to be.

His key responsibilities will include:
* Increasing the cost of everything in the workshop
* Introducing new policies nobody asked for
* Standing near broken Landcruisers pretending to help
* Making sure nobody working on the tools gets the job done too quickly or under budget
* Increasing paperwork by approximately 300%

Despite never previously operating a spanner, Anthony assured us his promises for the workshop would definitely be delivered sometime in the future and his word is his bond.

We look forward to seeing how the workshop survives this exciting new era.

Finishing the week off with a Unichip install on this HDJ79 Landcruiser.

This is something we’ve been doing quite a lot of lately and for good reason ! The 1HDFTE is an awesome engine, it just lacks a bit of power from standard.

This is where the Unichip really makes a difference, these come pre-tuned and ready to fit from the guys at HDAutomotive so you know the tune is on point !

We always pair these with a full service, inlet manifold clean and reseal, 3” exhaust and checking the valve clearances for maximum reliability and performance 💪🏼

This 1KD-FTV powered Toyota Prado came in with the customer complaint of being low on power, and they were dead right !

A quick look at the data showed the MAF and MAP numbers to be reading lower than I’d expect.

I had a look at the air filter and found it to be pretty bad, some parts almost completely blocked.

I gave the MAF sensor (air flow meter) a clean, it was pretty filthy too.

The MAP (Inlet manifold pressure) reading also looked a bit low, on further inspection I found a crack in the MAP filter so this was replaced.

Even though this car would have been making the right boost pressure all along, the ECU was only being told a much lower reading due to the cracked MAP filter. This results in the ECU thinking the engine is at a lower load point than it actually is and will not give the correct amount of fuel for the 200Kpa load point, resulting in low power.

I went for another road test to check the data and it was much better than before. The MAF reading was up to 260 grams per second from 150 grams per second and the MAP reading was up to 200Kpa from 150Kpa.

It now makes significantly more power than it was now that it’s seeing the correct readings from the sensors.

I also replaced the fuel filter as the sample had quite a lot of dirty particles in it. This wasn’t part of the low power problem, just maintenance.

Keep it simple:
If it can’t suck air it won’t make full power.
If it can’t accurately read airflow or full boost pressure at the sensor then it also won’t make full power.

This 200 Series Landcruiser came in for quite a decent 290000km birthday, it’s presents being a full injector kit with genuine Denso injectors, an intake and EGR clean and a new starter motor.

This one definitely wasn’t the worst carbon build up in the manifold we’ve seen but it’s always worth cleaning them out while you’re in there.

The same with the starter motor, if you’re spending this much time pulling everything out then it always pays to replace the starter motor as it’s such a time consuming job and you’re almost there anyway.

As usual I probably could have been a better photographer, maybe on the next one I’ll take a photo of all 8 injectors 😂

A huge shout out to Matt from DieselGeeks for coming through with a brand new set of genuine Denso injectors overnight as well as a sweet new shirt for my wardrobe !

It’s now back to running smooth and quiet, ready for the next adventure 💪🏼

We headed down to the Classic Landcruiser swap meet and 4wd show in Lithgow today.
I gave the 60 a quick detail yesterday to get ready for it and it came up great. I was even lucky enough to score the “Coolest Looking 60” award !

There was a great turnout and so many cool 40s and 60s. Even a really well done freshly restored FJ55.

This VDJ79 came in initially for a major service and full check over after being recently purchased to see if it needed anything.

Having only 230000km it was in pretty good condition except a bit of excessive diesel knock that I noticed on the test drive. The scan tool data showed that the injector compensation values were getting fairly wide. This doesn’t always mean bad injectors though so we scheduled our mate Gary at GO Diagnostics to do a relative compression test and make sure that the engine itself was all good before spending the money on a new set of injectors. The engine tested perfect luckily.

The customer then hit the go button on a new set of injectors, an inlet manifold clean and a new starter motor. Replacing the starter motor is always a really good idea while you’re this deep into a 1VD engine as it’s such an extensive job, it’s only really the extra time to remove and replace it as most things are already removed.

The carbon build up in this one wasn’t actually that bad, it still definitely needed a clean but it was a lot better than most that I clean.

Once it all went back together, it now runs noticeably smoother and quieter with none of that horrible diesel knock. The injector compensation values in the scan tool data are also now back to normal where they should be.

All ready to be a solid, reliable work horse for many years to come 💪🏼

First up today we have a 40000km service on a GDJR79 Toyota Landcruiser. The 2.8 litre turbo 4 cylinder auto little brother of the 4.5 litre turbo V8 manual.

I personally like these things, they’re smooth, quiet, make decent power standard and the auto transmission makes them nice to drive.

What do you think of these ? They’ve been out for quite some time now and I think they’re a decent car.
