Press each seam as you sew.⁠

It only takes a few seconds, but it makes your sewing neater, more accurate and much easier to put together.⁠

"What do I need to buy before I can start sewing?"

For a complete beginner, that question alone can be enough to stop them before they've even sewn their first stitch.

One of the things I see beginners forget when they're learning to sew is putting the presser foot down before they start stitching.⁠
⁠
It sounds so simple, but it happens more often than you'd think!⁠
⁠
The machine might make lots of noise, but the fabric doesn't move properly, the stitches don't form correctly, and it's easy to think something has gone wrong with the machine.⁠
⁠
The good news?⁠
⁠
Usually, nothing is wrong at all.⁠
⁠
Just lower the presser foot and you're ready to sew.⁠
⁠
It's one of those little habits that quickly becomes second nature, but every experienced sewer has forgotten it at least once!⁠

That's why I always teach the basics first. Getting those simple habits right makes sewing so much easier and far more enjoyable. 🧡🧵✂️⁠

"Why doesn't it fit me properly?"

For years, many people assume it's because they've chosen the wrong size or that something is wrong with their body.

But that's usually not the case.

Commercial sewing patterns are designed to fit a standard set of measurements. The reality is, very few of us are actually that shape.

That's why I love teaching pattern making.

When you understand how to make a pattern fit your body, everything changes.

Instead of trying to make yourself fit the pattern...

One thing every beginner should stop doing…

Pulling the fabric through the sewing machine.

I see this all the time, and it usually happens because people think they're helping the machine.

But you're actually making the machine work harder.

Your sewing machine is designed to feed the fabric through on its own.

Your job is simply to guide the fabric gently, not pull it.

Pulling can lead to:
✂️ Uneven stitches
✂️ Bent or broken needles
✂️ Fabric that stretches or puckers
✂️ Frustration when things don't sew properly

The next time you sit down to sew, try this instead.

Relax your hands.

Let the feed dogs do the work.

You'll be surprised how much smoother your sewing becomes.
