One thing that still surprises me after all these years of teaching is just how hard beginners are on themselves.

They see every little mistake.

I see how much they've learned.

They compare themselves to experienced sewers.

I compare them to where they started.

They apologise for things I barely notice.

I see confidence growing.

Heather made this hoodie and, like many students, she could probably point out a dozen things she'd do differently next time.

I just see someone who has learnt new skills and created something she can be proud of.

Sewing isn't about perfection.

It's about progress.

And sometimes I wish my students could see themselves through my eyes. 🧡✂️🧵

From inspiration... to reality. ✂️

This is Mia's version of an outfit she found in a magazine.

The photo on the left was the inspiration.

The outfit on the right is the one Mia created herself after completing the Pattern Making Course.

This is one of the things I love most about pattern making.

You stop relying on finding exactly what you want in the shops.

Instead, you learn how to create it yourself.

Pattern making isn't about being artistic.

It's not about being able to draw.

It's about understanding a simple process that allows you to create garments that fit your body and your style.

Mia saw something she loved and turned it into a garment she could proudly wear herself.

What a fantastic result. Well done Mia. 🧡

Which version do you prefer – the original or Mia's?

Meet Lacey.

As part of the Kids Sewing Project Course, students don't just learn how to sew.

After learning to make their apron and bag, they get to add their own creative touch by designing and decorating them.

This is Lacey proudly wearing the apron she made and personalised herself.

One of the things I love about teaching children to sew is watching their confidence grow as they create something with their own hands.

The school holidays are coming up, and sewing is a wonderful way for kids to learn a new skill, be creative and make projects they can be proud of.

What do you think of Lacey's design?

Comment KIDS and I'll send you the details of the Kids Sewing Project Course.

One piece of sewing advice that makes me cringe is:

"Just buy the cheapest sewing machine when you're starting."

I understand why people say it.

Nobody wants to spend a fortune on something they're not sure they'll enjoy.

But after teaching sewing for many years, I've seen what happens when beginners arrive in class with a $99 sewing machine.

The machine skips stitches.

The tension is inconsistent.

It struggles with different fabrics.

And before long, the student starts to think they're the problem.

They're not.

They're trying to learn a new skill while fighting with a machine that makes everything harder than it needs to be.

A good sewing machine won't magically make you a great sewer.

But a reliable machine will make learning more enjoyable, less frustrating and give you a much better chance of sticking with it.

That's why I always recommend buying the best machine you can comfortably afford rather than the cheapest one you can find.

Your sewing machine is your most important sewing tool.

And trust me, I've seen enough $99 machines arrive in class to know the difference.

What sewing machine did you start with?

One of the biggest reasons people put off learning to sew is because they think they don't have enough time.

I hear it all the time.

"I'd love to learn, but I'm too busy."

The truth is, most of my students aren't sewing every day for hours on end.

They fit sewing around work, family, grandchildren, holidays, appointments and all the other things life throws at them.

That's one of the reasons I love teaching online.

You can learn when it suits you.

Maybe that's 20 minutes after dinner.

Maybe it's an hour on a Sunday afternoon.

Maybe it's a couple of lessons one week and none the next.

You don't have to do it all at once.

Small steps add up.

Before you know it, you've gone from wondering how to thread your machine to making something you're proud to wear.

If you've been putting off learning to sew because you think you don't have enough time, you might be surprised by what you can achieve.

Have you ever put off learning something because you thought you were too busy?

Meet Tatiana.

When Tatiana joined the Beginners Sewing Course, she was starting where every sewer starts — learning the basics.

Look at what she's achieved.

This beautiful dress is the first garment Tatiana has made after completing the course, and I think she's done a wonderful job.

One of the things I love most about teaching sewing is watching students build their confidence step by step. What starts with learning how to thread a machine and sew a straight seam can lead to making garments like this.

Congratulations Tatiana. You should be very proud of yourself.

If you've been thinking about learning to sew, remember that every confident sewer started as a beginner.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make when buying fabric is choosing the fabric first and the project second.

They fall in love with a colour, print, or texture, take it home, and then wonder what to make with it.

The problem is that not every fabric is suitable for every project.

A fabric that looks beautiful on the roll might be completely wrong for the garment you have in mind.

That's why I always recommend choosing your project first and then looking for a fabric that will work well with that project.

It will make sewing easier, help your garment hang properly, and give you a much better result.

After more than 40 years of sewing, I can tell you that choosing the right fabric is just as important as choosing the right pattern.

Be honest... how many pieces of fabric are sitting in your stash waiting for the perfect project?

Going out wearing something nobody else owns.

You get to choose the fabric.
The buttons.
The little details.

You get to create something that feels like YOU.

Even after all these years, I still get excited finding beautiful fabrics and imagining what they could become.

That’s why I love teaching beginners.

Because sewing is not just about learning a machine.

It’s about creating things you cannot wait to wear.

And it starts one small step at a time.

People are often surprised when I tell them this…

A lot of sewing problems are caused by something really small.

Usually:

the wrong needle
incorrect threading
cheap thread
or simply missing one tiny step

It’s why beginners often think:
“I’m hopeless at sewing.”

When really…
they were never shown properly in the first place.

Learning sewing step by step makes such a difference.

That’s exactly why I teach the basics first in my Beginners Online Sewing Course before students move onto projects.
