The Drill Hall Emporium, in New Norfolk, combines a 19th century department store with quality antiques. You will find a wide range of items for the home, both decorative and practical, including quality antique furniture from fine English and French pieces to country oak and pine items. What makes the Drill Hall so appealing is the quality of the items and the display: you can browse the vast arr

ay of wares including copper cookware, kitchenalia, antique glass, china, silver plate table wares and cutlery; along with fine linens, rugs, mirrors, lamps and pictures. The stock is ever changing and the owners are always searching for new items. New Norfolk is just a thirty minute drive from Hobart along the beautiful Derwent River and is known as Tasmania's town of antique shops.

This is me, at the counter. Where you may have found me over the last few months. You see, Donna, my sister and business partner, had a fall 8 weeks ago and broke her ankle. In three places. Surgery, rest and the beginnings of rehabilitation has seen her start to find her feet again. She is hoping to return to the shop next week.

Anyway, I’ve been at the shop a lot more, at the counter nearly always, and have actually managed to improve my wrapping skills! I’ve really enjoyed connecting with all our customers, and generally just being a shopkeeper with all the duties that come with it.

Just a note, we will be closed tomorrow for the King’s birthday public holiday. Open again on Thursday as usual.

This weekend, why not get the wheels on the road for a good old fashioned country drive? Our town is brimming with shops, eateries and nature making it a great all-rounder for the family or a trip with friends. The weather is looking pretty nice for it, too.

H O N O U R E D . . . When The Design Files asked me for a list of some of my favourite Tassie “hidden gems” in Hobart and surrounds, my head was spinning with ideas. I quickly realised there is so many on my list, how do I possibly narrow it down? Anyway, here is my list, all somehow fitted into a few days. In all honesty, you need a week at least in Hobart and surrounds. Or a regular trip, as we know a lot of visitors do. I chatted to a visitor .c.h.o.l.e who said he has been 6 times in the last few years from the U.S. He simply loves everything we have on offer. It reminded me how much I have to be grateful for, living in what surely has to be one of the most wonderful places in the world.

Make sure you check this out, an immersive conceptual art exhibition by Brigata Ozolins and Dean Stevenson. Open Saturdays and Sundays 11-5 and Wednesdays to Fridays 10-2 until 3rd May. All part of the Tasmanian Autumn Festival which celebrates all the wonderful offerings in the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands throughout April. Head to to see more of exhibitions, events, workshops and food/tipple trails that are currently on offer!

We’re super excited to be hosting another outdoor Autumn Brocante at on Easter Saturday, April 4th. Expect a French style flea market with all kinds of vintage treasures and goodies. We will be flinging open the gates at strictly 9.30am, and open until around 2pm. Mark your calendars and don’t miss it! The kids will also have their stands out the front with their latest vintage finds.

The Derwent Valley and Central Highlands region will be celebrating all throughout April. A month filled with events, activities, workshops, and foodie & tipple trails to keep you well-fueled as you explore.

Autumn is truly the most beautiful season to experience

And for the locals? All of this is right at your doorstep!

As we head into Autumn, we are enjoying the lovely calm days here in the Derwent Valley. Nice cool mornings with the promise of afternoon warmth. We have a lot to look forward to coming up here in the shop, in particular the upcoming Autumn Festival which runs in our region for the entire month of April. If you are headed our way for April, you are definitely in luck. There will be so many events, trails and workshops to keep you enticed. We ourselves are hosting an outdoor French style brocante, or flea market, on Easter Saturday 4th April starting at 9.30am. Add it to your calendar, it’s always heaps of fun and lots of goodies to find!

New pieces in the store this week, including this charming English pine dresser with nice deep shelves and fretwork detail.

We are open today, Sunday, 10am until 4.30pm but will be closed tomorrow for the public holiday, along with our usual closed days of Tuesday and Wednesday. Open again on Thursday!

The back of the shop looking quite full at the moment, with English country furniture mixed with French chairs, a mirror and carved cupboard. If it’s been a while, it’s a perfect time to come for a visit. We are seriously brimming! Oh and have a seedling sale tomorrow (Saturday) from 11am and the is also on. Find out what a country drive can do for the soul, along with slower time spent in a country town.
