Solids are recommended to be offered no earlier than 4 months, with some families wanting to wait until closer to 6 months. A chat with your GP or local health nurse may assist you in deciding when is the right time for your family
Each child will be different and being aware of what to look for when commencing is important
Signs to show it might be time to start solids include:
interest in watching you eat food, trying to grab your spoon or start to make chewing movements with their mouths when around food
sitting unaided and able to hold head up
able to swallow food or move it to the back of their mouth without choking
Introducing solids can change the GI and microbiome which can lead to increased night waking, wind and constipation
Lunch is a great time to first offer solids as it causes less impact on overnight sleep and settling
If lunch isn’t possible, breakfast is a great alternative!
