As the founder of One Thread Road, I'm delighted to have been interviewed by writer, Lisa Rockman, and featured in their Weekender edition. I had the opportunity to share what inspired me to create our wardrobe sharing platform, as well talk about the collective effort we can all take to reduce our environmental footprint.

Just a little excerpt:

""I've always felt a deep connection to nature and, since relocating here, I've embarked on a journey to lead a more sustainable life within our society."

The couple decided to simplify their lives by designing and building a tiny home in Sam's father's backyard. They moved in a year ago with their baby daughter.

"During this transition and downsizing, I contemplated the life cycle of everything I owned, particularly my clothing," Weitz says.

"What struck me most was that I had been so concerned with plastic pollution and reusable items like grocery bags, water bottles, coffee cups and straws, but I hadn't considered clothing in the same light.""

The fashion industry produces around 100 billion garments each year!!! At the same time, 92 million tons of textile waste go to landfill, and Australians are the second largest contributors to that.

The good news is that there are plenty of options already in existence to tackle this problem of waste, fast fashion, and the affordability of quality clothes.

Try buying secondhand before you shop new, or consider sharing your wardrobe through lending and renting to offer options for one-off occasions. You can help reduce the demand for the production of new clothing, while connecting with your community of sustainably-minded, style-conscious people.

Who else feels like there's a constant pull in our society to feel like we can't show up to an event wearing anything we've been seen in before? Hands up if you agree. 🙌

One of my first thoughts when I'm getting dressed for an occasion is, "when did I wear this last?" followed by, "and which social circle was I with?"

I feel this standard and pressure are so integrated into our lives and deeply ingrained in our psyche, we don't even realise the effects it's having on the environment, and maybe even our finances (for some). The constant changeover of clothing is contributing to an industry (the fashion industry) that's the second largest polluting industry in the world, next to oil.

🌏 Let me repeat that: the fashion industry is the second largest polluting industry in the world!

So how do we solve this problem of satisfying our deeply rooted desires, while lessening our impact on the environment? And save money in the meantime.

Can anybody guess where this quote came from?

*Hint: a very wise children's author

In fact, the book from which this quote comes from portrays the perils of the precise industry that One Thread Road focuses on, illustrating the environmental consequences of overconsumption and resource depletion. Though it's simplified the inner workings and mechanics of a complex industry to make it obvious for children, do we really need to overcomplicate the big picture as adults?

More things = more waste = greater environmental degradation

And the message remains the same.

I’m still buzzing with excitement after the incredible launch party of our sustainably-focused, peer to peer clothing rental platform!

Despite the scorching heat, the energy was high, and the vibes even higher! I’m immensely grateful to everyone who came out, and joined us on this journey to a more eco-friendly and community-driven future in fashion. The enthusiasm and support we received are a testament to the power of coming together for a cause we believe in.

Thanks to who joined us as guest speakers, and discussed the issue of environmental overwhelm and how we can each overcome this.

Thank you again to our sponsors, and who donated some amazing prizes that our very lucky, yet very deserving winner, Mary, was the recipient of! Mary was one of our very first Lenders on the site, and has helped us to share and spread the word about our new platform since the beginning.
