Shortly, after setting up shop in 1966, Floyd wasted no time in convincing one of Australia's best surfers at the time, Bobby Brown to ride and shape for Gordon & Smith.

The duo laid a strong foundation for G & S to become a top brand in Australia even after Bobby's tragic death in 1967.

The proceeding period was a golden age for G & S Aus, attracting shaping and surfing talents such as Jim Banks, Michael Peterson, Peter Townend, Ian Cairns, Cheyne Horan, John Monie and many more.

By the mid 1970's the 'hot new Aussies' were well and truly leading the charge of the shortboard revolution which had started in 1967.

Larry and Floyd began building surfboards out of necessity, with no surfboards available within 50 miles of their homes, yet they still had to build a brand/logo.

With G& S still in their infancy, the search for the perfect logo was still on. Enter Mike Salisbury, a high school student at the time who would hang around PB point and drop by Gordon & Smith in between school and surfing.

Mike was already a gifted artist and talked Larry and Floyd into designing a better logo for them.

Having tried a couple of different logo's but not yet settling on one, Mike came up with a clean and attractive logo, the red cut out like templates of a surfboard, allowed the Gordon & Smith lettering in black to standout.

It was everything a new business wants in a logo and in 1961 they started using this 'original logo' made by Mike Salisbury.

G & S has had many legendary surfers, shapers and artists over the years help the brand remain at the forefront of design and innovation and Mike Salisbury is no exception.

Mike went on to become a legendary brand designer, making his mark on Jurassic Park, O'Neill, Surfer, Levi Strauss, Rolling Stone and even Michael Jackson's tux and white glove. among countless other brands and film campaigns.

There's Gordon & Smith and then there's Gordon & Smith Aus, so how did Gordon & Smith Aus come to be?

Having been established in California in 1959, G & S was in its 5th year of business by the time 1964 came around. Larry's childhood asthma had resurfaced and he wondered if he was physically up to shaping anymore.

Larry took a three-month break during the summer of '64 because of his health to start an architectural division at his father's business, Gordon Plastics.

During this time Floyd ran the business by himself, with the company in debt by the end of the 1964 summer, Floyd had done some thinking and decided to move his family to Australia.

Having worked the debt off the previous summer, Floyd and his wife Pam, as well as their boys, Buddy and Damon packed their bags onto a British ship out of Long Beach and left for Australia in September 1965.

After settling into Australian life, Floyd set up a shop in Cronulla and with the Aussies two years behind in design and innovation, Gordon & Smith Aus were on the map.

Gordon & Smith Aus officially started making boards in Australia in 1966 and before too long would make their mark on the surfing industry down under.

The 'Perfecto' a limited edition model designed by the late Floyd Smith, this is his version of the 'perfect longboard'.

When speaking about the Perfecto, Floyd Smith said 'the wide point in the centre helps turns, slips, slides and climbs while in trim position. Wide nose with concave helps nose riding. Wide tail area keeps rail straighter allowing for better speed, tucked in tail during last 12" (30cm) allows for great turns, especially the good old drop knee turn'..

'On the longboard you are always trying to get the most speed without the board locking in and making it hard to turn or break loose..I spent more time on (the bottom curvature) in the last 2 years than any others and found that it was the reason that some surfboard designs worked and others didn't'.

'You need a flat bottom in the back half of a longboard for speed and bite, especially when you are in the trim position. But a full hard flat bottom with full down rails on a longboard just locks you in and won't allow the slipping and sliding that makes a longboard sooo much fun!'.

We've personally tested this board ourselves on the beautiful point breaks of Noosa and we can say it bloody rips in a range of conditions. Slipping, sliding and climbing all the way into sunset. Cheers Floyd.
