And that’s a wrap. Six weeks of learning, growing, supporting each other and becoming a team.

Our first Garment Industry Workshop: Employment Readiness Training Program has come to an end, and there were more than a few tears on the final day.

10 women came together to build their skills and confidence for a future in garment manufacturing. Along the way, they learned new industrial sewing techniques, supported each other through the challenges and formed friendships that will continue beyond the workshop.

For some, it was their first time using industrial sewing machines. For others, it was an opportunity to build on years of sewing experience and develop new skills for commercial production.

And the next steps are already taking shape. 60% of participants have now joined our casual roster, giving them the opportunity to continue building their skills and commercial experience.

This is the first of three programs, proudly supported by the City Of Melbourne through its Social Investment Partnerships Program.

A special piece of fabric created by trademutt for Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds has been given a new life as hacky sacks, thanks to Assembled Threads.

The filling? 100% recycled HDPE plastic pellets from TRANSMUTATION.

Four organisations, different skills and one simple idea: create something purposeful that encourages movement and supports wellbeing.

Building pathways into garment manufacturing starts with opportunities to learn inside the industry.

Last week we welcomed 10 women into the Assembled Threads Hub for the first of three Garment Industry Taster: Employment Readiness Training Programs, proudly supported by the City Of Melbourne through its Social Investment Partnerships Program.

Over six weeks, participants are building on their sewing experience, developing new skills and gaining confidence using industrial machines in a live garment manufacturing environment.

Meet Sakina, a home dressmaker who has always sewn on a domestic machine:

“I’ve been sewing since a young age and I love it. In this workshop, it’s the first time I’ve sewn on an industrial machine. It was challenging at first but now I want my own machine! I feel much more confident using industrial sewing machines.”

As a social enterprise, we’re committed to creating pathways into the garment and textile industry through training, employment and industry connections.

Australia’s clothing waste challenge needs nationally coordinated action.

Every year, Australians buy 1.51 billion new clothing items, while 220,000 tonnes of clothing textiles end up in Australian landfill.

As a Seamless Australia supporter, we are sharing Seamless’ call for the Australian Government to set a target to introduce mandatory, nationally coordinated clothing stewardship by 2029.

A coordinated approach can create the certainty needed for businesses to invest, innovate and build the systems needed to keep more clothing in use and out of landfill.

The Ethical Buy is happening tomorrow.

Join Assembled Threads alongside ABMT GROUP Apparel and Shiny Embroidery for an online panel discussion on ethical uniform procurement, as part of Ethical Clothing Australia Week.

From the sewing floor to the finished garment, ethical manufacturing is about more than where a product is made. It’s about the people behind it, the conditions they work in and the choices businesses make when they procure.

We’ll be exploring what procurement teams should consider when choosing uniform and TCF suppliers, from supply chain transparency and ethical employment to the benefits of supporting Australia’s local manufacturing industry.

10 sewing kits. 10 names. 10 new beginnings.

Last week we welcomed 10 women into the Assembled Threads Hub for the first of three Garment Industry Taster: Employment Readiness Training Programs, proudly supported by the City Of Melbourne through its Social Investment Partnerships Program.

As a social enterprise, we believe pathways into the garment and textile industry need to go beyond a job. Alongside on the job training, we create opportunities for people to build skills, confidence and industry connections through programs like this.

This program is made possible through collaboration across our industry. A huge thank you to our Industry Mentor Group: Julie, our expert facilitator, Jenny from Ethical Clothing Australia, Peter from Thrive Refugee Enterprise, Samantha Delgos from Australian Fashion Council and FibreSkills Australia.

Each participant received their own sewing kit, proudly labelled with their name. A small moment that marked the beginning of something new.

Ten women arrived as strangers. By lunchtime, they were already becoming a team.

As our CEO Edwina said, skills and employment are the objective. But confidence, connection and belonging are a pretty wonderful place to start. 🧵
