NMT Fashion and Textile Design

NMT Fashion and Textile Design North Metropolitan TAFE
Fashion & Textile Design Department

RTO code: 52786

The fashion and textile industry values initiative, unique design interpretations, flexibility and lateral thinking, as well as skills in illustration, digital design, marketing and small business management. NMT's fashion program is the start of your pathway into a new and challenging career. NMT'S fashion and textile design courses are built around the recognition of current and future trends in

fashion, with an emphasis on good quality design and higher level skills. During your studies you will gain extensive knowledge in researching ideas, marketing, figure and design drawing, design pattern making, designing and printing textiles, and garment design and construction. You’ll have the unique opportunity to work in facilities dedicated to the creative arts and design, developing hands-on skills and new ideas in specialist studios and workshops. Fashion industry designers supplement the experience of lecturers in the fashion and design program at NMT, and enable students to engage in live projects, competitions and work experience within industry. Competition in the fashion and textile industry is intense and designers need to be guided by lecturers who have direct experience in the fashion world, are ahead of the trends, ready to adapt to changing market demands, new technologies and career opportunities. Designers work in a variety of environments such as fashion houses, design studios or retail fashion outlets. Some designers operate small or micro- businesses and are responsible for every aspect from the design concept to textile production, presentation and marketing of completed garments and accessories.

Thank you to the Embroiderers' Guild of Western Australia for hosting our Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and Textiles students. Both groups were presented with an immersive, curated talk from the guild members, as part of World Embroidery Day, titled 'Threads of Identity.' It was a wonderful interactive, cultural journey of the importance of embroidery in the sense of place and heritage. We are grateful to the guild for such an exceptional display through the historical and contemporary museum collection.
