Do you know how hearing works?

Through the ear canal, sound vibrations go into the middle ear, vibrate the eardrum and the three ossicles that connect it to the inner ear and, eventually, reach the cochlea – the snail-shaped part of the inner ear. With the help of hair cells, the cochlea converts sound vibrations into electrical impulses, which are sent through the auditory nerve to the brain, allowing us to hear.

But this is not the way hearing works for everybody. Sound vibrations can also reach the cochlea via the bones of the skull, by using the natural sound conducting properties of bones. And this is called bone conduction. This process is used in bone anchored hearing devices, as the device sends vibrations directly to the cochlea, bypassing problems in the outer or middle ear.

More than 400,000 people all over the globe with single-sided deafness, or mixed or conductive hearing loss, use bone anchored hearing systems.

Bone conduction devices are a great solution for those with atresia. Today is Good Vibrations Day, raising awareness for bone conduction hearing devices.
