July’s birthstone, the ruby, takes its name from the Latin ruber, meaning “red”; a colour long associated with love and passion. The ruby has been revered across cultures for centuries, prized for its rarity, its hardness second only to diamond, and the near-mystical energy it was believed to carry. Far more than a decorative stone, the ruby has long held a deeply powerful place in the human imagination; symbolising everything from protection and health, to wisdom and fortune.

A member of the corundum family, rubies owe their distinctive and celebrated deep red to traces of chromium within the stone. Historically sourced from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, the finest specimens carry a warmth and intensity that has captivated for centuries.

When it comes to care, most rubies, be it natural or lab-grown, undergo heat treatment to refine their colour to a truer, purer red, so it is worth understanding your stone’s specific treatment before cleaning. Generally speaking, rubies are wonderfully resilient; they can typically be cleaned using an ultrasonic, or simply with warm soapy water and a soft brush. A little care goes a long way in keeping this beautiful gem as vivid and vital as the month it represents.
