Passport masks were created by almost every ethnic group in West Africa across the 19th and 20th century..

Crafted small enough to fit in one’s palm, the owner would carry the mask when traveling. It would be woven into garments or worn as an amulet to keep the wearer physically and spiritually connected to their tribe.

A’Sika was born in Ghana in 2018, when Melbourne based designer Ella Badu began exploring her African heritage through the country’s rich cultural history and artisanal workmanship. Inspired by traditional spirituality, regalia and the beauty in symbolism, Ella brought her vision back home to Australia where she continued her own journey of storytelling through handcrafted jewellery.

Stephanie is a Melbourne-based jeweller. She began experimenting with jewellery in 2017 while completing a Bachelors of Fine Art (Sculpture) at RMIT, where she explored turning small sculptural and tactile works into statement pieces. ​​​​​​​​

Steph’s collection models her love of interweaving the organic process of jewellery making with more classical styles of craft. Steph's main sources of inspiration for her pieces are her natural environment, nostalgia, fairytales & romance. Many of her unique pieces pop with dashes of colour from ethically sourced gemstones. ​​​​​​​​

A'sika - Akrafena earrings

The Akrafena sword originates from the Ashanti tribe, located in central Ghana. It was originally meant for warfare but is now used in ceremonies to symbolise courage, responsibility and bravery.

The etchings engraved upon the sword are the Adinkra symbols used to convey the message of the mission; Osram, (The Moon) reflecting patience and understanding and Nsoromma (The Star) representing guardianship.

The hilt of the sword is topped with a clenched fist; the universal sign of resistance against oppressors and the iconic symbol for Black Power. The importance of these symbols and their meaning echo’s from their ancient inception through the ages, because Black Lives Matter today, tomorrow and forever.
