This year I had a crazy idea to pull off for Pixel Expo. Make an rc car drivable from anywhere in the world. This was an undertaking I couldn't do alone but I was like surely it can be done right?! a few tutorials later, we started the process of building a custom mini control board plus a mini pc and mounting it to the rc car that Soorian Ang built for us last year. Samuel Hoy figured this part out then we got to the final step and the platform that made it work was shut down.
We were devastated, having bought the tools and getting so close. So I message my long time friend who has helped me many years with various websites and modelling projects with what we were doing. Within a day Anth built a custom website, did a huge amount of coding that looked like some hacker movie stuff. This is when all the way from Melbourne, he could control the rc car.
final tweaks were made and we did our official test. Will it work from across the world. We got HellsDarcy to call in backup and Nick Brockmeyer logged on from USA to control the car. within seconds he started driving the rc car in our backyard in the hills of Perth, Australia.
The POV camera makes it feel like a real car. We plan to be able to allow guests from anywhere in the world to log on and take her for a lap. I have some fun ideas we could perhaps do for special events. We ended up quite busy at pixel expo so we showed it off to a few people in person by controlling it from phone and a xbox controller. I'm thinking of hiring a track and allowing streamers to race or cruise around. We are just getting started, and planning some race sim adaption and other rc types.
One of the things I find so much thrill in with this business is further expanding my ideas and limits with it to create an experience that brings joy and whimsy to others. I have absolutely down played how epic this is and how we managed to pull it off in the time we did. If anyone is interested to test it for us I would love to organise something π₯°
Also my inspiration for this idea was one of my favourite dreamcast games, toy racer, now i have my very own π
