SMEC ARCHIVE | July 2023

A little Friday throw back to the first prototype of what is now know as the SMEC Barrel hinge. Crafted locally from aluminium, the hinge is product development personified.

It’s also 10 years of collaboration, research, development and simply getting it DONE.

‘Can prescription lenses be fitted in SMEC frames?’

Short answer? Yes they can, your local optician can fit your lenses whilst ensuring your prescription is up to date.

Paving the way for SMEC Eyewear 2012-2014

After moving to Perth in 2011, I applied to North Metropolitan TAFEfor their Advanced Diploma of Jewellery design and kicked off my first semester in February 2012.

The next 3 years shaped my practise, skills and design ethos more than I could know. Learning hands-on jewellery skills from sawing, filing to lost-wax casting formed my appreciation for the handmade.

During this time I had the pleasure of being a student of Bethamy Linton | bespoke goldsmith and jeweller a maker: Bethamy once questioned why I was using mass-produced ear posts for a pair of earrings, this stuck with me long after I graduated - it’s the reason why SMEC Eyewear has custom hinges.

I’m beyond excited to be exhibiting SMEC Eyewear at Linton Atelier in Guildford, opening this Saturday 26 September, 3pm-5pm.

12 years after graduating North Metro, it truly feels like a full-circle moment which I’m incredibly grateful for.
