Established in 1899, Georges is committed to serving the people by providing quality merchandise, excellent customer service and providing Australian Made products wherever possible. Georges is one of Central Queensland’s historic businesses that today continues the tradition of Elien George and his sons Eddie and Alec. Elien established the business on his arrival in Australia, starting out as

a hawker with a couple of pack horses, servicing the needs of the CQ region and eventually becoming a local institution. At 20 years of age he organized the building of a four wheeled wagonette from Messrs Nelson & Co of Rockhampton, and with five drawing horses, he established his territory from Mackay to Many Peaks and Emerald to Emu Park. Eventually he was joined by his eldest son Eddie who carried on the travelling side of the business until the outbreak of World War II. The old wagonette was eventually replaced by a 1929 Chevrolet, which is still seen today at our Georges premises on William Street. Today the business continues in the family tradition under the management of Alec’s daughter, Catherine and her friendly team who still strive to provide the high standard of service and quality for which Elien was renowned.
