Australian Tapestry Workshop

Established in 1976, the Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW) is a centre of textile excellence. We welcome enquiries regarding tapestry commissions and sales.

Over 45 years this commitment to a collaborative approach has been skilfully developed by the ATW to the highest professional level and is maintained as a constantly evolving creative process. ATW tapestries are known for their vibrancy and technical accomplishment, as well as their innovative experimental interpretations. Today the ATW thrives on working with contemporary artists who seek to chal

lenge the ATW's weavers and dyer by providing tapestry designs in various mediums including photography, painting, watercolour and digital images.

WORKSHOP | Bead Weaving with Emma Buswell

Join artist Emma Buswell for a practical, hands-on introduction to bead weaving, and learn the techniques behind her much-loved roast chicken bag.

In this beginner friendly workshop Emma will share the fundamentals of bead weaving, including how to make a simple loom from recycled materials, and how to create patterned designs. You’ll put these techniques into practice to create your own beaded piece during the workshop.

Participants will also receive Emma’s much-loved roast chicken bag pattern, so you can use the techniques you’ve learned to make your own version at home. No previous experience is required and all materials are supplied.

INTRODUCING | Kate Beynon

Kate has been settling into the ATW studio over the past few weeks as our latest artist in residence. A Hong Kong-born, Naarm/Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist, Kate works collaboratively as TudoFAM, with son Rali Beynon and husband Michael Pablo. Widely exhibited nationally and internationally, Kate’s works are included in important private and public collections in Australia, Germany and USA. A nine-time Archibald Prize finalist, and Winner of the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize (2016), Kate was awarded the 2024 Yarra Arts Fellowship, is a Collingwood Yards Studio Artist, and an Associate Lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts.

During her ATW residency, Kate has been learning about natural colour and dye processes and developing a series of experimental new works. We’re looking forward to sharing more of what Kate has been exploring and developing during her time at ATW.

Our current Artist in Residence, Jackson Farley, has been named a finalist in the 6th Tamworth Textile Triennial. Congratulations, Jackson!

Opening at Tamworth Regional Gallery on 18 September 2026 before touring nationally, the exhibition will offer a chance to see what Jackson has been developing during his time at ATW.

For Sydney-siders, you can see Jackson’s work at Sydney Contemporary next week, where he’ll be showing with THIS IS NO FANTASY.

ON THE LOOM | Samara Adamson-Pinczewski | ‘Ascension’

Behind the scenes of ‘Ascension’, Samara Adamson-Pinczewski’s first tapestry project, woven by Tim Gresham at ATW over four months (300 hours).

Working from Samara’s painting, Tim made a series of creative and technical decisions to translate it into woven form. The work was woven on its side to capture the crisp geometric edges, while mercerised cotton was used to create a subtle, shimmering surface that reflects the iridescent paints in the original artwork.

In a first for ATW, the warps were hand-dyed and painted around the edges.

‘Ascension’ will be included in Samara’s solo exhibition at Charles Nodrum Gallery later in 2026. We look forward to sharing the finished work with you!

⏳ 18 DAYS TO GO! Applications for the Kate Derum & Irene Davies Awards close on 7 September, don’t miss your chance to apply!

Let’s revisit 2024 Kate Derum Award winner ‘Gleanings (self-portrait)’ by Anna Dunnill. In this tapestry, Dunnill explores ‘gleaning’, gathering and repurposing things that might otherwise be discarded or overlooked. Thread waste, beads, grass and hair are woven into the work, transforming them into something precious.

As the artist describes, “These gleanings, carefully selected and arranged, form a kind of map of myself. They take on an aura of preciousness, jewels made from rubbish.”
