Buttons by Brooke

Buttons by Brooke Buttons by Brooke was born when my daughter needed hair accessories. I bought a DIY hair tie making kit from Ebay.

I make Fabric Covered Buttons that can decorate your hair, body and your home.
~ hair ties ~ hair clips ~ paper clip bookmarks ~ head bands
~ fridge magnets ~ jewellery ~ thumb tacks After completing my first hair tie set, I thought, that was easy, and started to make more. With school just around the corner, I was worried that multi-coloured hair clips would be against the school uniform polic

y. As a result, the first official β€œButtons by Brooke” were made from the hem of my daughters new school dress. Soon making hair ties and snap clips, grew into a small hobby which then developed into a business. I started selling handmade items at local markets in Alice Springs on weekends. Over time the product range grew with customer requests. Fast forward several years, and we left the Territory for my home state of Victoria. Buttons by Brooke now attends local markets in the Swan Hill and surrounding communities.

πŸ’™ Today is Jeans for Genes Day. πŸ‘–πŸ§¬

I've been supporting Jeans for Genes Day since I first started my accounting career over 25 years ago.

Back then, I'd buy the little badges every year from our local jeans store. Looking through my collection this week, I found badges dating all the way back to 2001. I still think they're something special.

Life gets busy, stores close, and sometimes little traditions quietly disappear.

This year feels different.

Our family now has a much more personal reason to support the incredible work being done into genetic research.

My cousin's beautiful daughter, Margot, has been diagnosed with Trichohepatoenteric Syndrome (THES), an incredibly rare genetic condition. She's already shown more courage in her young life than most of us could imagine.

Today, I'm wearing one of my old Jeans for Genes badges (and jeans) in honour of Margot, and in support of every child and family navigating the unknown.

If you're able to, please consider making a donation today. Every dollar helps fund research and gives families hope for the future. Links are in the comments.

And if you're like me and have collected these little badges over the years, I'd love to know...

How long have you been supporting Jeans for Genes Day? πŸ’™πŸ‘–πŸ§¬

This week's blog isn't really about sport.

It's about having the courage to start.

Whether you're learning a new craft, beginning a creative project, returning to an old hobby, or simply trying something that feels a little outside your comfort zone...

Remember this:
Nobody starts on the podium.

Every expert was once a beginner, and every handmade creation started with someone willing to have a go.

I've shared a few personal stories from the Commonwealth Games and what they taught me about confidence, comparison, and simply showing up.

You'll find the blog link in the comments. I hope it gives you a little encouragement this Monday, and I'd love you to tell me in the comments what action you'll take this week.

Happy International Lipstick Day! πŸ’„πŸ’‹

Whether it's on your lips or on your favourite hair tie, a pop of colour always makes me smile.

Which lipstick shade did you wear today? πŸ’‹

Mine was pink, of course, because on Wednesdays we wear pink. πŸ’—

🧾 NEW BLOG | What's Hiding in Your Tax Return?

I've spent the past 27 years preparing tax returns, and every July, I hear the same thing...

"I thought my accountant already had everything."

The truth is, while technology has changed dramatically since I started in public practice back in 1999, there are still plenty of things your accountant can't see unless you tell us.

This week's blog is a little different.
It's also the beginning of something I've wanted to build for a very long time...

✨ Brooke's Accounting Library ✨

A place where I'll be sharing practical, plain-English advice to help take some of the mystery out of tax.

If you've ever wondered:
βœ”οΈ What information the ATO actually provides...
βœ”οΈ Why accountants don't rush to lodge returns in early July...
βœ”οΈ Why managed funds can delay your tax return...
βœ”οΈ Or why I still think good record keeping matters.....this one's for you.

I'd love you to have a read here:

πŸŽ„ Christmas in July!

No thanks. I'll take a 40-degree December day over the current 14-degree July day outside now.

But this is your reminder, Christmas is only 5 months away. It's time to plan now for an easier outcome later. πŸŽ…

πŸ’— The best $4 I spent this week...

Running a small business means celebrating the little wins.

Mine this week?
Four dollars at the laundromat.

Two clothes racks of towels dried, folded and back in the cupboard... which means the clothes racks are free to fill all over again with another weekend of washing.

It's funny how the smallest things can make the biggest difference.

What's the best few dollars you've spent this week?

You're not alone if the simple things feel heavy right now.

We're halfway through winter, and it's cold in Swan Hill currently, freezing even! πŸ₯Ά

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Joyeux Quatorze Juillet β€” Happy Bastille Day! πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

Paris has held a special place in my heart even before I visited, and over the years little touches of France have naturally found their way into my home, my memories and, of course, my button collection. β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™

Today feels like the perfect excuse to celebrate creativity, colour, and all things French.

Vive la France! πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

Are you a fellow Francophile, or is there another place in the world that has completely captured your heart?

🀳 My camera roll is full of beautiful scenery, special places, and memories I'm grateful to have captured.

But, like the fabric behind a button, there is often more to the story than what we see on the surface.

The photos capture a moment in time, not everything that surrounded it.
