Every week, I receive messages from women across the world telling me that for the first time in a long time, they feel connected to their culture again. That when they put on one of our pieces, they feel seen, proud, beautiful, and closer to who they are.

And that means more to me than any sale ever could.

House of Aulelei was never just about clothing. It’s about identity. It’s about belonging. It’s about giving our people something to wear that reminds them where they come from and who they carry with them.

To witness tears, pride, confidence, and connection the moment someone puts on one of our dresses is something I will never take for granted.

Unfortunately this is the reality I face on a daily basis.

The constant criticism. The threats. The judgment.
And the hardest part?

It’s not coming from strangers.

It’s coming from our own people.

The very people who should be uplifting one another

“If your business is Samoan, why are you doing Māori designs?”

“You’re not even Māori.”

“If you’re Māori, why does your business have a Samoan name?”

“You’re profiting off Islanders.”

“You’re disgusting.”

“You’re a disgrace to the Pacific community.”

The list goes on.

Words like these have the power to break someone. To make them question everything they’ve built. To make them want to throw it all away and give up.
But what many of you don’t understand is what I’m actually trying to build here.

I am Māori and Filipina.
The father of my children is Samoan.

Neither of us grew up with perfect role models. Neither of us grew up fully immersed in the rich cultural environments that many are blessed to have

It wasn’t until we became parents ourselves that we truly understood how important culture is.

How important it is for our children to walk through this world with pride in who they are.
With confidence in where they come from.
With a deep love and respect for all cultures, not just the ones that run through their veins.

I have four beautiful children watching everything I do.

Every decision.
Every sacrifice.
Every setback.
Every win.

And if I can teach them anything, it’s that culture is meant to unite us, not divide us.
That there is room for all of us to celebrate one another.

That lifting others up will always take us further than tearing each other down.

So send the emails.
Make the comments.
Throw the insults.

Because all you’re doing is making me hungrier.
More determined.
More focused on building something bigger than myself.

Something my daughters can look at one day and know that their mother stood tall, even when people tried to tear her down.

Tall Poppy Syndrome has held too many of our people back for too long.

It’s time we did better.
It’s time we became better.

Because our future generations deserve bett
