Record breaking history into a jersey. 🐇💚❤️

On 13 March 2026, Alex Johnson did what many thought would never happen.

With his second try against the Sydney Roosters in Round 2, AJ scored career try No. 213, surpassing the great Ken Irvine’s 57 year old record to become the greatest try scorer in Australian rugby league history.

The achievement came in just 244 first grade games, and although South Sydney Rabbitohs fell 26-18, the result became almost a footnote. Moments after the record breaking try, thousands of Rabbitohs fans flooded Allianz Stadium to celebrate one of the game’s all-time greats.

In an incredible twist of fate, when Ken Irvine broke the all time try-scoring record back in 1969, his side also lost 26-18. Rugby league has a funny way of writing history.

To commemorate the milestone, South Sydney and Classic Sportswear released this special Alex Johnston Record Breaker replica jersey, featuring the printed inscription: (embroidered on his match worn)

“Alex Johnston – All Time Record NRL Try Scorer 213. Rabbitohs vs Roosters. Allianz Stadium – Fri 13 Mar 2026.”

A fitting tribute to one of the finest finishers the game has ever seen.

🐇 213 tries… and counting.

1995 Brisbane Broncos #25 Match Worn Reserve Grade Jersey

Here’s a closer look at one of the most interesting jerseys I’ve added to the collection.

It’s easy to look at this as just another 1995 Broncos jersey, but the story behind it is far more interesting.

This is a genuine match worn No. 25 jersey, showing all the signs of being used on the field. The faded screen printed numbers, heavy cotton construction and overall wear all point to a jersey that has seen plenty of game time.

My research found that No. 25 appeared just once in Brisbane’s first-grade squad during the 1995 ARL season, in Round 2 against Western Suburbs, where Brett Galea was named in the jersey. After that, No. 25 doesn’t appear again in first grade for the rest of the season.

That led me down another path.

Everything points to this jersey continuing its life in Brisbane’s reserve-l grade side, but unlike first grade, very little documentation from reserve grade has survived. I’ve spent hours searching through newspaper archives, historical records, match reports and collector resources, yet complete reserve-grade team lists from 1995 are incredibly difficult to find.

Based on the players regularly appearing for Brisbane’s reserve grade side throughout the season, it’s likely this jersey was worn by players such as Brett Galea, Scott Blacker, George Wilson, Darren Robinson, Shaun Keating or Alan Cann. Until original team sheets surface, though, I can’t confidently attribute it to one individual.

One particularly interesting discovery is that SkandasVintageJerseys owns Brett Galea’s 1995 away “Diamond” match-worn jersey, which is also numbered 25. Whether that’s coincidence or another piece of the puzzle remains to be seen.

A massive thank you to pala_trading for selling me this incredible piece of Broncos history.

If anyone has 1995 Brisbane Broncos reserve grade programs, Big League team lists, photographs or video footage, I’d genuinely love to hear from you. I’d love to solve the mystery of who wore No. 25 throughout the 1995 season.

📦 Holiday Jersey Unboxing – Part 2

This one turned into a rabbit hole…

This is a 1995 Brisbane Broncos match worn No. 25 jersey. From everything I’ve uncovered so far, No. 25 appeared just once in Brisbane’s first grade squad during the 1995 ARL season being in Round 2 against Western Suburbs, with Brett Galea named in the jersey. It never appeared again in first grade. I’m assuming however that the Broncs wore this strip as it was a home game, but it was also at night, and the broncs famously wore the diamond strip at night…

The evidence suggests it then spent the rest of the season in the Broncos’ reserve grade side, but that’s where the trail goes cold.

I’ve searched for reserve grade team lists, match programs, newspapers, photos and video footage…whatever is for free anyway and can’t find anything.

Interestingly, SkandasVintageJerseys owns Brett Galea’s 1995 away Diamond match worn jersey… also wearing No. 25.

Huge thanks to pala_trading for this incredible addition to the collection.

Keep an eye out for the follow up photo post where I’ll dive a little deeper into the story behind this jersey.

📦 Holiday Jersey Unwrapping – Part 1 | Final Look

Following on from the reel, here is the full look at the first arrival in the series: the 2026 One NZ Warriors Kōtahitanga jersey and matching playing shorts, brought to us by Dynasty Sport

After coming home from three weeks overseas to a stack of jerseys and footy gear waiting for me, this felt like the right one to open first.

Designed by former Warrior Lewi Brown , the Kōtahitanga jersey is built around the idea of unity, connection and representing all of Aotearoa. The red, blue, white and black design draws heavily on the Warriors’ early-2000s identity, but the strongest feature is the meaning behind the detail.

Across the upper back are individual coloured emblems representing the traditional colours of New Zealand’s rugby league regions. They acknowledge the grassroots communities, clubs and pathways that help feed the game across the country and reinforce that the Warriors belong to all of New Zealand, not just Auckland.

That detail ties the whole jersey back to the meaning of Kōtahitanga: unity, togetherness and collective identity.

The matching playing shorts complete the set beautifully, with the regional colour theme continuing through the side panels and the full sponsor layout giving it a proper on-field finish.

A strong modern Warriors release with genuine meaning behind the design, and a very worthy first addition to the Holiday Jersey Unboxing series.

Final verdict: one of the Warriors’ better recent alternate kits?

📦 Holiday Jersey Unboxing – Part 1 🇳🇿

After three weeks overseas, I came home to a stack of jersey deliveries waiting for me… so instead of opening them all at once, I thought I’d turn it into a new series.

Every couple of days I’ll be unboxing another jersey or piece of footy gear that’s arrived while I was away. Hopefully there are a few surprises along the way!

First up is the 2026 New Zealand Warriors Kotahitanga Jersey, paired with the matching playing shorts. 💚💙❤️🖤

The Kotahitanga jersey is more than just another alternate strip. “Kotahitanga” is a Māori concept meaning unity and togetherness, with the 2026 design reimagining the iconic 2001 jersey that marked the club’s transition from the Auckland Warriors to the New Zealand Warriors. Designed by former Warrior and Kiwi international Lewi Brown , it celebrates a club that represents all of Aotearoa, bringing fans together under one jersey.

I won’t go too deep into the details, but first impressions… this is an absolute beauty from Dynasty Sport , and the matching shorts complete the set perfectly.

Another country footy gem added to the collection. 🍀

This Wagga Brothers Junior Rugby Wagga Brothers RLFC jersey has all the hallmarks of the early 2000s, with my research pointing most strongly towards 2001.

Some of the clues include:
🏉 Classic Kombat manufacture
🏉 Country Rugby League (CRL) logo
🏉 Early-2000s NRMA sponsorship
🏉 CSS branding on the back
🏉 Period sponsors including Sporties, Riverina Crane Services, A&J Geale Cabinets
🏉 And Junior Rabbits South Sydney Rabbitohs sponsorship on the back.

Unfortunately, historical records from the local rag the Daily Advertiser, WIN and Prime aren’t readily searchable online, so I haven’t been able to confirm the exact season just yet. Based on the jersey design, sponsor lineup and manufacturer, I’d estimate it dates from 2000–2002, with 2001 the most likely year.

If you’re from Wagga, played for Brothers, or recognise this jersey, I’d love to hear from you. Every bit of local knowledge helps piece together the history behind these jerseys.

📍Estimated year: 2001 (circa 2000–2002)

This is why I love collecting rugby league jerseys.

At first glance, it’s “just” a 1995 gctitans Gold Coast Seagulls jersey.

But dig a little deeper and there’s a story.

This jersey appears to be a 1995 issue, yet it still carries the earlier Tooheys sponsorship. Looking back through 1995 footy cards, you can actually see the sponsorship transition unfold:

🏉 1994 – Tooheys sponsor
🏉 1995 Series 1 – Tooheys removed from the cards
🏉 1995 Series 2 – Seagulls logo replaces Tooheys

Then there’s the collector journey…

📍 September 2024 – 🏉🏏 ANZ Sporting Archive 🏉🏏
📍 Boothy’s Rugby Relics
📍 Rewind Rugby
📍 Somewhere along the way, back to Boothy’s Rugby Relics
📍 April 2025 – My collection

One of the things I love most about this hobby is that these NRL jerseys aren’t hidden away forever. They move from one passionate collector to another, each becoming a temporary caretaker of a piece of rugby league history.

I’m proud to be the next caretaker of this one.

Now for the question…

Do you think this is an early 1995 issue, or a leftover 1994 jersey that continued to be used after the sponsorship change?

I’d love to hear what other Seagulls collectors and jersey historians think.
