This is not about blame. It is about awareness.

Most parents I see are doing everything right. They just didn’t know what to look for, because nobody told them.

Amblyopia affects 1 in 50 children. It does not hurt. Kids don’t complain. And most will pass a standard school eye check without anyone picking it up.

“They’ll grow out of it.”This is the sentence I hear most often from parents and as an Orthoptist, it is the one that breaks my heart the most. Amblyopia does not resolve on its own. The brain does not fix what it has learned to ignore. But catch it early, treat it properly, and most children achieve excellent vision. The challenge is knowing what to look for before the window closes. That’s why I have created an in depth resource for parents to know all the milestones of your childs vision, so you don’t miss the signs. Meet Kruz, our latest Speckles Superstar 💛

Kruz is almost 2 and has ring chromosome 18, a rare chromosomal condition that can affect children in different ways, including their vision. He has recently started patching to help strengthen his left eye, and he loves watching Miss Rachel in his patches and heading off to playgroup.

Stories like Kruz’s are such an important reminder that there are many different conditions that can affect children and their eyes. Early eye checks matter. They can help families get answers sooner, start the right support earlier, and feel more confident in their child’s vision journey.

By sharing your child’s vision story, you may be the one post that encourages another parent to book that eye test, or helps another family in the early stages feel seen, supported, and less alone.
