I've been in my sewing room this morning with the first season of The Great British Sewing Bee playing in the background while I pottered about.

One of the things I really enjoy about the show is the camaraderie between the contestants. They're all incredibly talented, but they're also genuinely supportive of one another. It's refreshing to watch.

It got me thinking about our own sewing community.

This photo was taken at a sewing retreat a few years ago, and it reminded me how much I enjoy spending time with people who just get the joy of making things. Sewing isn't exactly a spectator sport, but there's something really special about chatting, sharing ideas, helping each other out and celebrating each other's projects.

Some people have a regular sewing group, others head away on retreats, join sew-alongs, or simply catch up with a crafty friend every now and then.

Public Service Announcement from the Minions...

Your sewing machines would really appreciate a little love today!

Take five minutes to brush out the fluff, wipe away the dust, add a few drops of oil (if your machine needs it – your manual will show you where the oil ports are) and maybe even treat it to a fresh needle.

And here's a little rule of thumb... if you can't remember the last time you changed the needle, it's time to change the needle!

🧵 What's This Foot?

There's a huge range of sewing machine feet available, but many of them never make it out of the accessory box.

That's why I'm sharing some of my favourites, explaining what they do and when to use them. If you have a mystery foot sitting in your accessory box, pop a photo in the comments and I'll see if I can help identify it.

This week's foot is the Stitch in the Ditch Foot (also known as an Edge Joining Foot, or Edge Foot).

At first glance it doesn't look very different from a standard foot, but that little metal guide running down the centre is what makes it special. It's designed to sit directly in the seam (or "ditch"), helping you sew accurately along an existing seam line with a straight stitch.

Because your stitches fall into the seam, they're much less noticeable from the front of your project. It's a great choice for quilting, attaching bindings, securing facings, or anytime you want your stitching to blend into an existing seam.

Rather than watching the needle, simply keep the centre guide running in the seam and let it guide your stitching. It's a simple feature that makes it much easier to sew a beautifully straight line.

Despite its name, that's only half the story.

This foot is also brilliant for edge joining. Place the guide between two folded fabric edges and use a zigzag or decorative stitch to join them together without the fabrics overlapping. It's a lovely technique for heirloom sewing, decorative seams, and attaching lace or trims while keeping everything evenly aligned.

If you're using it for stitch-in-the-ditch sewing, keep your needle in the centre position so it lines up with the guide. For edge joining, experiment with different stitch widths and decorative stitches—you might be surprised by the effects you can create.

If you could only sew with one type of fabric for the rest of your life, what would it be? 🤔

Mine is an easy choice... Cotton Lycra Jersey Knit.

I know I'm biased 😄, but it's such a versatile everyday fabric. I've used it to make clothes for my kids since they were babies, and I can see us sewing with it right through their teenage years.

It's light and breathable through summer, easy to layer through winter, washes beautifully, holds its shape and colour so well... and it doesn't fray!

I know some people are a bit hesitant to sew with stretch knits, but I actually find them much more forgiving than woven fabrics. If I'm not millimetre perfect when I'm cutting out my pattern pieces, it rarely matters. Maybe it's because many knit garments have a more relaxed fit... or maybe it's just magic. 😄 Either way, I find stretch knits much less intimidating to sew.

Now I'm curious... if you could only sew with one fabric for the rest of your life, what would it be?

One of the questions I'm asked surprisingly often is...

"Do you really make your own underwear?"

Absolutely!

In fact, it's one of my favourite things to sew. Once you've found a pattern you love, they're quick to make, fit exactly the way you like, and they're a brilliant way to use up those leftover pieces of Cotton Lycra Jersey Knit that are too good to throw away.

These were made from our Black Cotton Lycra Jersey Knit, finished with black picot elastic.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I bought everyday underwear from a shop.

Quilt update!

Don't worry, I won't keep giving you a blow-by-blow account of all the quilting. There are still millions of hoopings to go, and I think we'd all be over it before I finished! 🤣

Overall though, I'm really happy with the path I've taken. From everything I've been reading, this approach falls into what's often called "dirty quilting" - embracing the joy of making without worrying too much about perfect seams, precise points or what the quilt police might think. That sounds exactly like my kind of quilting!

I'll keep quietly working my way through the hoopings and will share another update when I reach the next exciting milestone... joining all the blocks together.

My 12-year-old had some pocket money she'd been saving and decided she wanted to buy herself a new outfit.

I thought it was a great opportunity for her to make her own purchasing decisions, so we headed off to one of the big clothing stores and started looking through the racks. She quickly found a few items she liked.

Meanwhile, I was trying very hard not to blurt out "I could make that!" every five minutes and completely spoil the experience for her. 🤣

Instead, I was mentally matching everything to patterns I already own and calculating how much fabric I'd need. It made me realise that I don't really shop for clothes anymore.

I shop for ideas.
