Book Week sewing is ON! 🏛️

I did a print run this morning and snuck in a little love job for the eldest - this fantastic Camp Half-Blood panel for her Athena costume.

Once the print has cured, I'll turn it into a T-shirt ready for Book Week.

She's made this costume particularly easy on her one-woman costume department - jeans, orange Camp Half-Blood shirt and she's Athena. 😂

Meanwhile, Medusa's black dress is still waiting for me...

Better get cracking! 🐍

I had all sorts of sewing plans for the weekend.

Want to know how many stitches I actually made?

Not. One. 😂

I've been sick, so sewing time was replaced with nap time and, I'll admit, I was a little annoyed with myself for “wasting” an entire weekend when I could have been getting things done.

But I've woken up this morning feeling so much better, and in hindsight the weekend clearly wasn't wasted at all. Apparently doing absolutely nothing was exactly what I needed.

My sewing will still be there when I'm ready for it. 🧵

Book Week sewing is about to begin... and I need some help from my sewing brains trust!

I am SO glad our school celebrates Book Week a little later than everyone else. I'm convinced they do it purely to give this tired mum an extra week to get her act together. 😂

Both of my kiddos are currently mad about the Percy Jackson books, so naturally we're having a Percy Jackson themed Book Week this year.

My youngest is going as Medusa. We've got the snake headpiece and belt sorted, and although I've noticed a lot of the commercially available Medusa costumes are green, she is absolutely adamant that her dress needs to be black.

Who am I to argue with Medusa? 🐍

So black cotton lycra it is. Now I need a pattern!

I have a pretty clear picture in my head of what I'm looking for - essentially a long, fairly straight t-shirt style dress without a lot of shaping. The snake belt will pull it in at the waist, so the dress itself can be really simple.

I'm thinking short or 3/4 sleeves, kids' size 10-ish, and definitely stretch knit. I'm happy with either dolman or set-in sleeves.

Does anyone have a favourite kids' knit t-shirt dress pattern that would fit the brief? Bonus points if it's a PDF so I can get started straight away!

Meanwhile, my eldest has been considerably kinder to this one-woman costume department! She's going as Athena and has requested jeans and an orange Camp Half-Blood t-shirt.

Gee... it's not like her mother can just whip up a custom fabric panel and make her a shirt...

Oh wait. 😂

Apparently I have my Book Week sewing assignments. Better get cracking!

What's This Foot?

There's a huge range of sewing machine feet available, but many of them never make it out of the accessory box. That's why I'm sharing some of my favourites, explaining what they do and when to use them. If you have a mystery foot sitting in your accessory box, pop a photo in the comments and I'll see if I can help identify it.

This week's foot is the Buttonhole Foot.

If you've ever put off sewing buttonholes because they seem a bit intimidating, you're not alone! This foot is designed to help guide the fabric while you create neat, consistent buttonholes.

On my machine, I sew a four-step buttonhole, changing the stitch selector to sew each side and the bar tacks. Other machines have a one-step buttonhole function that automatically sews the entire buttonhole. Either way, the buttonhole foot helps keep the fabric stable throughout the process.

The exact method will depend on your sewing machine, so it's always worth checking your instruction manual. Once you've had a little practice, sewing your own buttonholes becomes much less daunting.

Another little peek behind the scenes at RJF HQ...

Yesterday I was powering through a production line of 60 tote bags. Today? Calendar Club 2027 is officially ALL SYSTEMS GO! 📅🎉

I've just signed off on the artwork for our 2027 Rubyjam Fabric Wall Calendar and sent it off to the printer.

Owning a little fabric store certainly involves a lot more than playing with pretty fabric all day. 😂

I've been creating our wall calendars every year since 2019 and they've become a bit of a Rubyjam tradition. So now the artwork is out of my hands and it's over to the printer. Hopefully it won't be too long before I can show you the finished 2027 calendar!

In the meantime, where are my Calendar Club members? How many Rubyjam calendars have you collected over the years? 😄

Just a little sneak peek at the organised chaos behind the scenes at RJF HQ today! 😂

I've got a wholesale order for 60 printed tote bags to get out the door, so today is very much a head down, keep the production line moving kind of day.

I've got my audiobook in my ears and I'm powering through until I can get these babies finished.

Project Underwear Phase 2 is back on track! 🩲

I'm back to cutting today, and I've decided to add a little personal touch to this batch.

My youngest loves teddy bears, so every pair is getting a teddy bear gusset, regardless of which print I've used for the rest of the underwear.

She's going to LOVE finding little bears inside every pair. 🧸

And that's absolutely why I'm doing it. Well... mostly. 😂

The truth is, when I'm standing in front of Mount Foldmore trying to sort everyone's clean laundry, I honestly have NO IDEA which knickers belong to which child.

The kids know, of course, but strangely enough, helping Mum sort the washing rates very low on their list of fun things to do. 😂

So from now on: Teddy bears = youngest kiddo.

No checking sizes. No guessing and getting it wrong. No loud voice asking, "Who owns these?" Just find the bears and into the right pile they go.

Sure, I could sew clothing tags into them like a sensible person... but that still requires me to remember who has which tags!

Sometimes the best sewing ideas are born from love and thoughtfulness. And sometimes they're born because Mum is tired of sorting knickers. 😂

Do you sew for the dads in your life? 🧵

I think handmade sewing tends to skew very heavily towards babies, kids and women's clothing, and sometimes the dads get a little forgotten!

With Father's Day only a couple of weeks away, it's a good excuse to change that.

A handmade tee is an easy one, but there are plenty of other options too — un**es or boxers, pyjama pants, a hoodie, a beanie, even something practical like a BBQ apron.

And of course, if Dad appreciates a terrible joke, there's always a novelty panel. 😂

A little heads-up from me though: if you're planning to use one of our printed panels for a Father's Day make, now is the time to get your order in.

They're printed to order here in the studio and still need to make their way through the post to you — and then you need time to actually sew the thing!

I'd hate for anyone to have the perfect Father's Day sewing plan and a panel still travelling around Australia on September 6. 😂

So... does Dad get handmade goodies in your house, or does he tend to miss out?

You might have noticed things have been a little different around here lately...

For a long time, a lot of what appeared on this page was understandably about what's new at Rubyjam — new fabrics, new products, restocks and everything else happening in the shop.

But over the past few months I've been deliberately changing things up. With reach becoming increasingly unpredictable, particularly in our Facebook group, I started thinking about what I actually wanted this page to be. And I knew I didn't want it to feel like one long catalogue.

Rubyjam has always been about sewing. I sew. You sew. We buy fabric because we want to turn it into things. So instead of only showing you what's sitting on the shelves, I've started sharing more of what happens after the fabric leaves the shelf. The things I'm making. The things I'm learning. The things I've been doing for years. The shortcuts I take that apparently aren't nearly as criminal as I thought they were. 😂 The things that go horribly wrong. A little behind the scenes at Rubyjam, and a lot more everyday sewing life.

And I've really enjoyed it!

It's given me a kick to get back into my own sewing room more often and actually get things DONE. I've finished projects, started new ones, broken a surprising amount of sewing equipment and apparently employed a headless underwear model along the way. 😂

I'd love to know how you're finding the change too. What would you like to see more of? Or less of?

Project Underwear: Phase 2 has officially commenced! 🩲

I've started cutting out the next batch of underwear today. Fabrics have been chosen and I'm happy to report there are no further injuries to either my new cutting mat or rotary blade.

I did get a little distracted while I was cutting though...

My rotary cutter slipped and somehow accidentally cut out an entire new t-shirt for me. Whoops! 🤷‍♀️

Obviously, once that happened I had no choice but to sew it together. I've used my go-to t-shirt pattern that I copied from an old Cotton On tee, this time in our Butterfly Field in Pink.

So Project Underwear Phase 2 is underway... mostly. It just took a slight detour for a moment! 😂
