VINTAGE 'HOUSE OF MERIVALE' FAUX FUR 1970S COCOON COAT, BEST ON A SIZE 10.

Long before the Hemmes name became synonymous with Sydney hospitality, House of Merivale was one of Australia's great fashion institutions. I love the mob wife vibes and the indulgent use of fabric that MERIVALE was renown for. Zero stinginess.

Founded by John and Merivale Hemmes, the label became renowned throughout the 1960s and '70s for beautifully made garments, luxurious fabrics and a level of craftsmanship that set it apart from much of Australian ready-to-wear. They produced investment pieces with impeccable construction, elegant silhouettes and quality that was intended to last for decades. And this coat is a powerful testament to that.

My mother had exquisite taste and she adored Merivale, it represented beautiful tailoring, exceptional quality and a quiet confidence that never needed a logo to announce itself. It was aspirational Australian fashion at its finest.

This extraordinary late 1970s faux fur coat is exactly why the label earned that reputation.

The most magnificent cocoon silhouette, dramatic oversized sleeves and an enveloping shawl collar, wrapped in sumptuous leopard faux fur woven through shades of warm honey, toasted caramel, golden ochre, biscuit and deep espresso. It has incredible movement, incredible presence and that unmistakable feeling of true vintage luxury.

It's almost impossible to believe it's nearly fifty years old. The silhouette feels entirely contemporary. An insane piece. SOLD
