Shuten Dōji: The Drunken Demon

Shuten Dōji was one of Japan’s most feared oni, a powerful demon said to live on Mount Ōe near Kyoto. His name means “Drunken Demon,” earned from his legendary love of sake.

According to the legend, Shuten Dōji and his band of oni terrorised the region, kidnapping people and bringing them back to their mountain fortress.

The warrior Minamoto no Raikō and his men were sent to defeat him. Disguised as mountain monks, they entered the fortress and gained Shuten Dōji’s trust. They offered him enchanted sake that weakened him, waiting until he fell into a drunken sleep.

Raikō then drew his sword and beheaded the demon. But Shuten Dōji was so powerful that even after death, his severed head attacked Raikō, biting at his helmet before finally being defeated.

His legend became one of Japan’s most famous tales of oni, warriors, deception, and supernatural power.
