I do love a palm tree! And we are lucky to have plenty where I live in Sydney! A glorious walk down to our local beach with grandchildren today. This is Sydney winter weather at its best! The boys are surfing đŸ„đŸŒâ€â™‚ïž of course, and there are swimmers doing laps in the beach pool! Not me!😉
Hope your weekend is fabulous!

I realised that I need to hurry up and get my “Mary Rawlinson” quilt finished for an early August deadline! Hand quilting has now begun on this English Paper Pieced quilt inspired by the original made in 1876. The quilting is difficult and my stitches are further apart than I like them - reason being: I’ve used a white cotton sateen background fabric which is a bit thicker than normal weight quilting fabric + my ‘white’ batting is a bit denser than I would like!😒 + to top it off, I’ve decided to quilt it in red!! Of course, every wobbly stitch shows and there’s been a bit of ‘reverse stitching’! 🙄
Can’t stop now, there’s a deadline!!

Blocks for my ‘Dutch Mariners Compass’ quilt are now sewn together waiting for borders!
How do you decide on placement for your blocks? An easy way is to lay them out how you ‘think’ you want them, take a colour photo, then cut the photo into blocks and have a play! Sometimes you can choose the layout a lot better working from a picture!
I do like the blocks with strong red points but I also love the one with the pale aqua points! Love the ones that look like a Viking helmet (top middle!)
What secondary patterns do you see?

My very clever Sophie .paddington.upholsterer has completed her first quilt top!! 80 pieces of precision hand piecing in these 12”circle blocks for her “Dutch Mariners Compass”!!
With this attention to detail, it’s no wonder her upholstery and soft furnishing business is set to take off!

Not the best photos of “Linen and Liberty” WIP, but it is coming along slowly! Final appliquĂ© borders to start before I can properly photograph for the pattern release. Working on too many quilts at the moment and yes, I did start a new one this week!!

Last push to get the quilting finished on my ‘1830s Longcloth Quilt’ and then a binding/edge finishing decision to make.

(I’ve discovered that you may need more information on the cutting guide in the pattern so I will email everyone who has downloaded a pattern for this quilt over the weekend and specify exact cutting measurements for the panels - just so there’s no confusion. The pattern currently gives the “finished size/add seam allowance”. It’s all there - just adding more information in case you need it!)

Here is a ‘blast-from-the-past’ basket quilt. Made about 43 years ago it was about my second quilt, sewn on the machine then hand quilted! King sized, using ordinary calico as the background which has faded over time to the palest ivory. I remember soaking and washing the calico several times before using it.
On the back is a ‘basket-weave’ fabric just to continue with the basket theme! 😉😉

. And the quilting continues on my 1830s Longcloth Quilt long into the night

And it’s starting to look like a quilt!! 2 more blocks to go on my “Dutch Mariners Compass”. These will be shelved for awhile as I go back to finishing the hand quilting on my ‘Longcloth Quilt’
Both patterns are on my website and on website together with templates.
Mariners Compass blocks have been a fabulous portable project to sew on my travels in Tasmania last week!
