At our annual quilt convention in Melbourne, we have a real treat in store for textile lovers.
In our Friday evening (April 11) lecture at AQC, you can meet Priscilla Bianchi and hear about her life as a Guatemalan quilt artist. This session will be a showcase of Priscilla’s Guatemalan cultural context and artistic work.
Enjoy the rich visual of Guatemalan textiles and Mayan people. This inspirational slide lecture will appeal to quilters and non-quilters alike. Priscilla’s Guatemalan background reflects a region known for its rich textile culture of weaving and embellishment along with vibrant use of colour. However the region is without a quilting tradition.
Priscilla tells her amazing story as a quilt maker, her inspirations and her journey to become a renowned art quilter with a unique position in the industry due to her use of traditional textiles.
With humour, entertaining stories and lots of insight, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this lecture.
5.30pm, April 11, Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton, Victoria.

Update: Further to the below, after careful consideration, given a choice between showing the Red exhibition without two quilts (Yvonne Iten-Scott's work 'Origin' was also excluded) or removing the entire exhibition, SAQA have announced that they have decided to remove the exhibition from this venue. This juried exhibition of 39 quilts is supposed to be shown as a whole. This action supports the quilters concerned and upholds the right of freedom of expression by artists. Well done SAQA.
Following CENSORSHIP of this quilt at an American quilt show this week where it was excluded from being hung, we have decided it needs another airing here in the digital world. We were honoured to have this quilt in our touring exhibition last year, where it was shown at our events in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as part of SAQA's Red exhibition. It has been shown at venues in Houston and also at QuiltCon.
