Following on from my last post, here are a few more flat fashion styling ideas for when those little dog ears show up after a mastectomy.

These tweaks can make a big difference to how clothes fit and feel, especially around the sides and underarms.

Camisoles and layering
A lightweight cami under a looser top adds gentle smoothing and comfort. Scarves or shawls can also be draped over the shoulders for easy coverage.

Play with styles
Halter and off the shoulder cuts can look beautiful, just pay attention to how they sit across your chest and neckline.

High cut bras or swimsuits
If dog ears sit under your arm, try bras or swimwear with higher sides for coverage that won’t rub sensitive skin.

Go seamless
Seamless bras or soft shapewear help avoid irritation along scars while keeping everything smooth underneath.

Comfort is key
This isn’t about hiding your body, it’s about feeling comfortable in it. Every scar, curve, and fold tells your story. You’ve earned the right to feel confident in your clothes.

If you found this helpful, follow for more flat fashion styling tips and outfit inspiration or DM me to grab the Her Flat Look Guide, where I share all my post mastectomy style advice in one easy to follow PDF.

After a mastectomy, many women notice that clothing sits differently across the chest.

One simple, yet effective styling approach is using patterns to create visual dimension.

Here’s why it works:
The eye naturally follows lines, contrast, and movement. When you wear a solid colour, the eye reads the chest as one continuous, flat surface. But patterns, like florals, abstract prints, or even soft stripes, break up that space, making it less uniform.

This disruption of a single visual line can soften the appearance of flatness and create the illusion of subtle shape.

Some pattern tips to try:
• Smaller, scattered prints draw the eye in multiple directions
• Busier patterns reduce focus on any one area
• Textured or layered prints can add depth
• Avoid large empty blocks of colour across the chest if you want less emphasis there

This isn’t about disguising your body. It’s about understanding how clothing works visually, so you can choose what feels most comfortable and supportive for you.

Have you noticed a difference when wearing patterns vs plain fabrics?

If you find no b***s changes the way your tops or dresses fit you, eg the straps are too long, but your not an experienced sewer. Try this simple sewing tip I came across

DON’T be the friend who says:
“Just let me know if you need anything.”

Most people dealing with a new cancer diagnosis or a recurrence will never ask.
They’re often in shock.
In survival mode.
Trying to process fear, appointments, decisions, and uncertainty, all at once.

They don’t know what they need. And they shouldn’t have to.

BE the friend who acts.

Send the fruit basket.
Send the Uber Eats voucher.
Call, just to chat.
Make time to visit.
Sit with them. Walk with them. Show up.

And don’t do it just once.

Check in again. And again.
Because long after the initial news, they’re probably still scared, overwhelmed, and carrying more than they show.

If you genuinely want to help, go out of your way to make them feel loved and supported, not with half hearted, well meaning comments, but with presence and consistency.

That’s what real support looks like

No rules. No expectations.

Just support, shared experience, and confidence built on your terms.
