This week, we shine a light on diabetes and eye health for National Diabetes Week.
While diabetes is often associated with blood sugar management, it can also affect eye health. Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of several eye conditions that may affect vision over time. Many diabetes-related eye conditions can develop gradually and without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular eye examinations are an important part of monitoring eye health and detecting changes over time.
This National Diabetes Week, take a moment to learn more about the connection between diabetes and eye health. If you have questions about your eye health or vision, speak with your optometrist.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE EYES
➊ One million colours?
The human eye can distinguish approximately one million different colours — amazing, right?
➋ Upside down?
Every image that hits our retina is actually upside down. Luckily, our brain flips it so we see right-side up.
➌ The body’s fastest muscle?
The orbicularis oculi — the muscle used for blinking — is the fastest reacting, responding in less than 1/100th of a second.
➍ Lucky green?
Green eyes are the rarest natural eye colour. Only around 2% of the world’s population has them.
➎ More than just seeing?
Optometrists can detect early signs of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and even brain tumours through eye checks. Your eyes are incredible!

Every six weeks or so we get together for a breakfast (or sometimes dinner!) meeting.

It's our chance to check in, share ideas, discuss what's happening in the practice, and make sure we're all on the same page so we can continue providing the best care for our patients.

If we're being completely honest we just love the excuse to catch up with each other over a yummy, local meal! 😉

Deafblindness is a unique disability that combines both vision and hearing loss — not always total, but enough to impact daily communication, mobility, and access to information.
It’s more common than many realise. Thousands of Australians live with some form of combined hearing and vision loss, affecting people of all ages.
People who are deafblind often develop powerful ways to connect and communicate — from tactile signing and braille to assistive technologies and tailored support. Awareness is the first step toward inclusion.
Let’s use this week to recognise and celebrate the resilience and creativity of people who are deafblind.
