Jo Peterson lives down on Melbourne's beautiful Mornington Peninsula and is a busy mum to two gorgeous teenage boys and wife to a wonderful and supportive hubby, Warren. She works part-time as a chemo nurse and has a full-time passion for all things millinery. She has her gained millinery qualifications at the renowned Melbourne Fashion Institute and from the iconic Kangan Institute of TAFE. She i

s constantly undertaking various short courses to refine specific techniques in hat making and to continually improve her individualised designs and styles. Jo has a love of vintage fabrics, lace and pearls and enjoys mixing them up with modern materials to create headpieces with a unique flair. Using only the highest quality materials, Jo’s headpieces have gained recognition at local race days and at industry events, including:

Millinery Australia's 2025 Design Award PEOPLE’S CHOICE voting is now open.

I went a little ‘left field’ this year with my interpretation of the theme and decided to celebrate Melbourne's weather with my design. I made an excel spreadsheet of the temperature and rainfall over the last 365 days and turned that data into a hat!

“Four Seasons in One Day” is a celebration of Melbourne’s famously fickle weather - unpredictable, dramatic and unique.

Here’s the story behind my design...

At the heart of my design is a stylized, origami-inspired umbrella. Its brim features a gradient of colours, forming a heat map that captures Melbourne’s daily maximum temperatures over the past year. Cool blues transition into warm yellows and fiery reds, tracing winter’s chill into the heat of summer.

Along the umbrella’s edge, black crystal elements are scattered like raindrops - each one marking a day of rainfall, a gentle reminder of when a brolly might have come in handy!

Here the back view of my entry ‘Poseidon’s Promise’ for this year’s PEARL themed Design Award.

Ruched silk, pearls and pe**te hand beading were used to adorn both the inner and outer aspects of my trident crown headpiece to portray a stormy sea with whisps of sea foam and sea weed…a gift from Poseidon to his bride on their wedding day.

Here is my entry ‘Poseidon’s Promise’ for this year’s Design Award. The theme was ‘PEARL’ in celebration of the Millinery Association’s 30th anniversary.

In Greek mythology legend tells that Poseidon gifted his bride, Amphitrite, a pearl adorned crown on their wedding day to represent his everlasting love and commitment.

Layers of ruched silk, pearls and pe**te hand beading were used to adorn both the outer and inner aspects of the gold trident crown.

It’s that time of year again…the Design Award!

The theme for 2024 was ‘PEARL’ in celebration of the association’s 30th year anniversary.

A challenging but exciting theme that saw all sorts of ideas dance around in my head. And anyone that knows me knows I adore pearls and I wear them every single day…so it really was a dream theme for me.

‘Blue Ice’ was inspired by the beautiful cloche hats of the 1920’s and Dorset buttons from the 1620’s for the Design Award held in Adelaide in 2021. We were locked down during Covid in Melbourne during this time, so it was rather ironical that my entry travelled more than I did criss-crossing Australia as part of the Top 10 Design Award display promoting all things hatty.

Another flashback as the excitement of the 2024 Design Award and Gala drawn near. This is my 2023 entry ‘Its’s Amore’…or more affectionately known as the ‘Pineapple Hat’!
