I feel I have unintentionally been creating this collection for the last few years, collecting materials with local provenance that are important for me, from outback Queensland to use at some point in the future. Like my insight knew this collection was coming before I understood myself. I have been using Queensland Sapphires and opals for a while now in custom work and my own designs, but it wasn’t until last year when I returned home that I finally recognised what my intuition had been leading me to.

That pull to return home and quiet yearning to be there, despite having built a beautiful life here in Tasmania. The beauty in the imperfections and ruggedness, of the in between. Spending a lot of time on my own, in my travels to far Northwest Queensland I’ve had so much time to ponder, to journal, to write and reflect.

Some of the pieces I’ve made represent Life. It’s been weathered, corroded and at times eating the shiny surface away, but it only makes things more beautiful, if you really pay attention. Once the surface has been taken away only to reveal more depth, more character, more meaning, more beauty.
A reminder that there is always light shining from the darkness, and love will always find a way to move forward and grow.

Come with me as I return to the place that first held my name, back to my family, woven deep into the red dust and long horizons of home. After twenty years away, I am drawn back not by choice, but by loss. Eleven months ago, my brother’s sudden passing shattered the distance I had carefully kept, and the road from Townsville to Cloncurry began calling me home.

I remember those ten hour drives as if they never stopped, the bends in the highway, the tired roadhouses, the endless sky stretching over the Channel Country. Even after forty eight sleepless hours and crossing the breadth of the country, something in me softened the moment I arrived. Grief travelled with me, but so did a quiet peace. The land remembered me. And I remembered it.

With every visit, I gather fragments of the past to carry back to my own family, stories, scents, colours, the warmth of familiarity. There is a deep ache in returning, a longing that lives somewhere between sorrow and belonging. The beauty of the Channel Country moves through me, and I let my hands respond freely to what my heart sees. Each piece I create is an offering, shaped by childhood memories, yet held in the understanding of an adult who now knows what it means to lose.

I am not someone who easily lays vulnerability bare. But this journey asks it of me. This is more than a return, it is a reckoning, a remembering, a tribute. A story that must be felt as much as it is told. And in telling it, I honour my brother- not only in grief, but in love, in memory, and in the enduring landscape that shaped us both.

The new year is here and so are new opportunities! After taking a year to refocus on the business and recharge, I've reopened appointments on the website and they're almost fully booked. As always, my mind is buzzing with new ideas, but I've had to slow down a bit due to some unexpected chemical burns on my hands. I'll be opening up more appointments for May after March gets booked up, and I'm working on adding new pieces to the website. My Heartlands Collection is coming along, inspired by my upcoming trip to Queensland and the feelings of home I want to capture. I’ve also added a studio assistant to the NVJ team, Amy- she will be a key contact person online, for the website and getting creative with TikTok,
So make sure you jump in and follow along on workshop shenanigan’s on TikTok.
Thanks for being part of another year of creating jewellery that tells your story. Love Nic xx

I fell in love with this one

I asked if my client would mind me filming her opening the box and sharing her reaction and this is generally the beautiful response I have when handing over a new commission. It is absolutely what makes my work so special, sharing these moments with my clients. I hear so many memories and reflections in my design consults and these all contribute to the design and take shape for what I start to envision a new piece will look like. There is often so much emotion tied to jewellery, be it joyful or sadness, but the beauty I find most powerful is when I have clients reclaiming the narrative of what once was and creating a new story for it and turning heart break into something strong and beautiful. It’s the ultimate queen energy I love to see.
