lenoeudpapillon The world's best bow ties

Today I made mistake - the line from the film is something like “you said the important of a good blue suit can never be overstated” responded with “quite right, the blue suit is the most versatile of accoutrements” and I know there is a line in a novel somewhere that says “all one needs to make a good start in life is a good blue suit” and I think that was a book set in Tuscany - please forgive this old man despite eating sardines three times a week none of my grey matter seems to be improving and my heart doesn’t seem to be pumping any better. Anyway - a couple of things - if you are going to get measures for a tuxedo for your wedding or celebration come spring - don’t waste that opportunity to get yourself a good blue suit. It’s just the bomb in terms of functionality and wearability - use the jacket for smart casual and jeans, the waistcoat too, wear the trousers with a more casual jacket. In these uncertain economic times the blue suit it for a man what the lipstick effect is for women. Go on, treat yourself, it’s a better investment that a Swiss watch in my opinion. And here’s some tailors I recommend in Sydney. Leng Bespoke A L E X G O O D M A N REMY P. Johnson Zink & Sons - Daniel Jones AKKARI MENSWEAR and for your shirts Studio Shirts

Well tonight an overseas entrant from India asked if our competition was legitimate and was the prize 🏆 money genuine because he and some of his illustrator friends were concerned it was a scam. So he is an artificially generated 🤖 image (kidding) of the genuine real McCoy winner of the inaugural scarf competition Mr Kieran Davis who genuinely (Kieran Davis can you verify it for them) received his 1000 australian dollars into his bank account and is really wearing his own scarf here Coffs Harbour. So far I’ve never sold a bow tie to someone and delivered thin air - I hope to hold myself accountable for my competition in the same way. Rest assured the competition is real, as real as Kieran Davis who I am super proud to see him wear his winning scarf design. Entries close September 1st. Be there, or be square … pun intended (not sure it worked though).

Ps: his winning design now hung in the studio where you can all inspect it like the way they check the Pope’s bona fides before a nomination - you can stand underneath it and look up for yourself.

The next design was so good that I asked the entrant to provide some sketch work so we could see it wasn’t merely a prompt. And I don’t want to be too judgey because these computers 🖥️ are wonderful and helping you lighten the load. This is Annie Pope and I was just blown away by the colours and composition. From Annie:

Hi there
Annie Pope here. I would like to enter the scarf design completion with my design called “bush symphony”
Thank you for the opportunity to create something magic! Annie x

This design is a reflection of so many things I genuinely love. I’ve always been obsessed with art, design and colour, particularly the boldness and playfulness of Pop Art and the way unexpected colours can completely transform an image. I love creating things that feel vibrant, a little whimsical and full of personality.

For this scarf, I wanted to bring that love of colour and design together with something distinctly Australian. Our incredible native birds became the inspiration, reimagined through beautiful layers of aqua, turquoise, cobalt and deep blue. I wanted the birds to feel almost woven into the artwork rather than simply placed upon it, creating movement and little moments of discovery throughout the design.

Ultimately, this scarf feels very me. That being colourful, artistic, slightly unexpected and joyful. It combines my love of Pop Art and contemporary design with the beauty of Australian birdlife, turning something from nature into a piece of wearable art.

You have been warned - it will be heavy posting until September 1. This next submission brings cubism into the mix. From Efanur Rahman :

Hi Nicholas,
Thank you so much! I’m really happy that you love the artwork. Your feedback means a lot to me.
My full name is Efanur Rahman, and I’m from Bangladesh. I’m a graphic artist and designer, and I’m especially interested in illustration, branding and visual art.
For this scarf, I was inspired by the combination of tropical nature and Cubist art. I wanted the toucan to be the main character, surrounded by bold tropical leaves, flowers and two subtle abstract faces. I focused on strong shapes, flat colours and a balanced composition so the artwork would feel distinctive and work beautifully as wearable art.
My process started with developing the main composition and the toucan, then I experimented with the surrounding botanical elements, abstract faces and colour palette. After that I simplified and refined the shapes to give the artwork a cleaner, more sophisticated vector style suitable for a silk scarf.
My Instagram is — you’re very welcome to tag me when you post it.
Thank you again for the opportunity and for your kind words. I’m really excited to see it posted next week!
Best,
Efanur Rahman

Today I had a knock on the door as it frequently the case - people love to come and annoy me when I’m trying to focus on my work. This is Anthony Spon-Smith, formerly the owner Coco Republic which was a family company, now striking out on his own with a new international wholesaling furniture business called Emrik. He was instrumental in us doing our Quiet Please 🤫 tennis 🎾 scarf as he loves clean lines and minimal design. He also happens to swim in our little bathers group at 6am at North Bondi when he’s not travelling for his work. Anyway Emrik has no instagram handle so I can’t get you to see his work but I can tell you it’s outstanding only he won’t sell us any because it’s wholesale and by container load only. It focused primarily on outdoor furniture. Very cool stuff. Google Emrik to take a look.

• Best. Pyjamas. Ever. (Other than my own Swiss milled Egyptian cotton, obviously.) x •

It’s been a big week and we have spammed you a lot and if you’ve had enough I would certainly understand and there is more to come until the scarf competition is finished for submissions September 1.

As I wind down in my birthday 🎂 suit my patron was happy to share this with me and I’m assuming his wife is looking forward to bed. I mean he looks so silky I’d be happy to hold onto him myself …

And much gratitude to my customers who tag themselves wearing our products - it was built by men who prefer a hand tied bow tie - thank you Liam.

And finally - I won’t beg - but I do sincerely ask you to consider our fine merino jersey wool t shirts made in conjunction with Marco from Albeni 1905 | Merino Jersey - you don’t have to own a pink suit to appreciate them - they go with absolutely everything you can think of from athleisure to ski gear.

Bon weekend - I’m playing around with designs and my illustrator is just about to finish our second back country silk scarf.

I managed to convince one of the most elegantly dressed women floating around the a Vaucluse precinct to adopt our silk scarves and she’s now wearing our pocket squares in her hair too. Her name is Kim and when she came in she left with a few extra gifts 🎁 - lagniappe it’s called - look the word up. And it came back the following day when she dropped off a sample of her spray on moisturiser and picked up some more silk. Thanks Kim, this old warthog looked more like a prince 🫅 post my spritz. The wedding season approaches. I have said so many times, so many many times, don’t leave it too late ⏰, especially if you need our bespoke service. But every year around August I deliver the same message and every year grooms and groomsmen and wedding guests put it off until the last minute and then rush you as soon as they hit their final stretch. Nevertheless, my phone is on - and unlike my competitors you get straight to the person who runs the show - there’s nobody between me and you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And the reward is that sometimes at 11:30pm on a Thursday night you get a lovely message and photo from a happy customer. In Simon’s case, he also left it to the last minute. No matter, we got it dispatched to him on the same day he reached out.

“Looked and felt a million bucks. Thankyou for finishing off my suit for my wedding day !! It was the perfect touch.” Simon

Peta Davidson runs Treats By Pete and is considered a Rocky Road Rock Star 🎸 🌟. She’s made us a custom edible butterfly vanilla cookie for our Studio guests this month and we will send them out with Australian orders until they run out. What a pleasure to work with her, after I ate her choc chippie cookie I was sold sold sold on a “collab” ….

The next submission in the Design A Silk Scarf Competition comes from Nicholas Rutten in Adelaide, South Australia. I really love this and I think it would make a beautiful scarf. What are your thoughts ? About Nick:

My paintings are often recognised and described as:

Contemporary Modernist / Geometric Abstraction / Modern Mid-Century

My work explores mid-century modern abstraction through gestural mark-making and a bold, expressive use of colour.

I formally studied visual arts at Adelaide Central School of Art; although predominantly self taught through trial and self-exploration.

Inspired by the rhythms of seasonal change, I create layered compositions of geometric forms and recurring patterns that evoke transformation and movement.

Balancing structure with spontaneity, my practice investigates spatial relationships and how repitition interacts with colour.

Influenced by mid-century modern design, I create layers of transparent forms, bold colour palettes, gestural mark-making, and repeated motifs.

My designs and paintings seek to create moments of reflection, where order and fluidity coexist, revealing new perspectives with each encounter, particularly by playing with the depth of light, shadow, and negative space.
