BASE - fairly handmade in Bangladesh

BaSE is social business, certified Fair Trade organization. Since 1977 produce & export handicrafts. The producers are from marginalized communities.

BaSE stands for Bangladesh Shilpo Ekota, which means United Artisans of Bangladesh. Its set up to co-ordinate and promote the handicraft products of various female manufacturing groups out of the mainstream, especially those working in the rural areas producing various types of handmade items such as Date Palm-leaf & Jute Basketry, Jute Macramé & Crochet, Nakshi Hand Embroidery, Women Clothing and

Accessories. BaSE has been an active member of WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization) since 1999. BaSE owned by women producer groups and in total over 10,000 producers (99% are women) organized in 17 producer groups and having over 3,000 products. BaSE artisans have excellent capacity & skills to prepare custom-made products according to buyer/partner requirements. BaSE uses local raw materials and products are Natural, Biodegradable, and Recyclable. BaSE products are handmade and sustainable.

It was a true pleasure to welcome Mai and little Sage from New York to BaSE Handicrafts Ltd. 💚

We were deeply touched and inspired that Mai made the long journey with young Sage to visit us. Their visit was filled with meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and exciting discussions about future collaboration between The Picnic Day and BaSE.

World Refugee Day 2026

Today, we honor the strength, resilience, and courage of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety and hope.

At BaSE Handicrafts, we believe that access to skills, decent work, and market opportunities can help restore dignity and create pathways toward self-reliance.

Through the financial cooperation of ILO and LOH, BaSE recently provided hand crochet training to more than 300 Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. We have witnessed firsthand the creativity, determination, and potential that exist within refugee communities.

We are also grateful for the opportunity to recently meet with the UNHCR Dhaka team and the MADE51 team from Geneva, including our longtime friend and colleague Cristina Gent. Together with fellow handicraft exporters, we explored future opportunities to expand handicraft skills training and livelihood development for Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar.

As a member of the global fair trade movement, we believe craftsmanship can build bridges between communities, create sustainable livelihoods, and connect refugee artisans with customers around the world.

On this World Refugee Day, we stand with displaced people everywhere and celebrate their talent, resilience, and aspirations.

On 9th May, alongside our World Fair Trade Day celebration, BaSE proudly conducted our Annual General Meeting with the active participation of all our women producer group leaders.

Together, we reviewed our activities, discussed future action plans, explored challenges and possible solutions, and strengthened our shared commitment to Fair Trade and sustainable livelihoods.

We were especially grateful to virtually welcome our beloved Sondrio family from Italy, Mr. Benedetto, and our valued friend and partner from EquoMercato, Mr. Alessandro. Their inspirational and motivational speeches deeply encouraged our artisans and team members. 💚

The entire day was filled with colourful traditional dresses, meaningful discussions, laughter, songs, shared meals, and heartfelt connections.

Fair Trade is not only about products — it is about people, dignity, solidarity, friendship, and hope.

Together, we continue building a fairer and more sustainable future.
