Vivienne Westwood, the bleach-haired, red-lipped iconoclast who jolted fashion forward into the confrontational, statement-making era of punk music, died today at the age of 81 in London, surrounded by family and friends.

Westwood began her fashion career making T-shirts and bo***ge gear with Malcolm McLaren, at a shop, most popularly known as S*X, that became both a clubhouse and incubator for London’s punk movement. She continued to shape fashion throughout the 1980s, ’90s, and 2000s, as her sexy, riotous designs inspired by British culture and history, and were beloved by fashion insiders, celebrities, and well-heeled women alike.

She was consistently ahead of her time: her interest in reworking old garments into new ones presaged the fervor for upcycling, and her instinct that fashion was a natural partner for street culture came decades before the invention of what’s now called “streetwear.” Over the past half century, Westwood has influenced everyone from Martin Margiela to John Galliano to Glenn Martens.

Most recently, she became a hero among Gen Z fashion fans, who made her corsets into the archival fashion movement’s most collectable garments.
