COLLECTIBLE Brussels in section TABLESCAPES

The table setting draws inspiration from the simplicity of a napkin, gently divide the round table. Each hanging fold creates a subtle boundary, shaping a sense of intimacy around every set of utensils.

The series was first introduced within Come for Dessert, a performative installation in which participants consumed edible versions of various objects designed by Claes, co-developped with food researcher Isabelle Lieshout. The edible objects were presented alongside the same shapes made from ceramics, silver or epoxy. By collapsing the boundary between object and consumable matter, Claes pushed the investigation further, questioning what remains of an object’s meaning when its material form is literally absorbed and dissolved.

Presenting “Utensils” at COLLECTIBLE Brussels from 11 March to 15 March in the new section TABLESCAPE

“I’m fascinated by the idea of cutlery, as it embodies a duality of values - between object, materiality, and function. A set of utensils whose “value” and behaviors in daily life shifts depending on the material from which it is made. By extending this idea not only to materiality but also to form, I aim to create a tension between the utility and the intended way of use.”

Series Utensils•

Fascinated by the idea of cutlery, as it embodies a duality of values—between object, materiality, and function. A set of utensils whose “value” and role in daily life shifts depending on the material from which it is made. By extending this idea not only to materiality but also to form, I aim to create a tension between the utility and the intended form of use. This places the user or viewer in a scenario where they are prompted to choose between different “design objects” and engage with them in everyday practice. This interaction triggers a shift in value, where the designed object initially becomes mundane, only to reclaim the significance attributed by the user afterward.

Part 9

The end

I would like to invite you to our pop-up
At Kloosterstraat 181 in Antwerp from December 2 to 8.

I’ll be showcasing my new collection of handcrafted silver jewelry alongside the works of other talented designers.

On December 7, I’ll be present to share the stories behind the pieces I’ve made, and in the evening, we’ll have a small party to celebrate this lovely pop-up experience.

And just a little reminder—it’s almost the holiday season!
