🇪🇺Europe cannot subsidise its own deindustrialisation.

Speaking at the European Parliament public hearing on the Industrial Accelerator Act, industriAll Europe General Secretary Judith Kirton-Darling called for a strong approach that turns public support into investment, quality jobs and industrial capacity in Europe.

🏭 Public money must deliver public value.
👷 Made in Europe must mean good jobs, collective bargaining and strong social standards.
🔗 Europe must retain complete industrial value chains – not simply final assembly.
🌱 Lead markets and public procurement must drive investment and the green transition.

The Industrial Accelerator Act is a historic opportunity to rebuild Europe’s industrial future and strengthen our strategic autonomy.

Europe cannot afford to miss it.

Great to join the debate at in Antwerp today with ABVV-Metaal & BTB ABVV: unions are the bedrocks of democracy. There’s no political democracy without industrial democracy. Building trade union power is an existential challenge for workers’ rights in the AI age ✊

🕯️ Solidarity with Ukraine’s workers

According to our affiliate PMGU, a Russian ballistic missile struck the Zaporizhstal steel plant on 11 August, killing seven workers and injuring 21.

The workers were doing their jobs and moving towards a shelter when the plant was hit.

Judith Kirton-Darling:

“We stand in full solidarity with PMGU and all Ukrainian workers. Workers and civilians must never be targets of war. We condemn this horrific attack and call for accountability and decisive international action to protect workers and their fundamental rights.”

Our deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of those killed, and our solidarity with those injured.

🇺🇦 Workers must never be targets of war.

Swedish union IF Metall has ended its almost three-year industrial action against Tesla in Sweden. The reason is straightforward: Tesla bought out all of the union's striking members at the company, so the action can no longer have an effect.

"There seems to be no limits to the length Tesla would go to keep unions out of their operations," says Atle Høie, IndustriALL general secretary.

"Unfortunately they have managed to pay their way out in Sweden. At least that has given the former IF Metall members more money in their pocket, but the insecurity of not having a union or a collective agreement still remains."

For almost three years, trade unions across the Nordic countries, Europe and the world stood in solidarity with IF Metall's members at Tesla. That solidarity mattered, and it will keep mattering the next time an employer tries to keep unions out.

Tesla Sweden has bought out all of our striking members at the company. This means that the dispute no longer has any effect. We are therefore calling off the industrial action and bringing the dispute to an end.

We can conclude that Tesla is so strongly opposed to collective bargaining agreements that it would rather buy out employees who are union members than provide them with secure working conditions. This is unprecedented in the Swedish labour market — as is Tesla’s systematic use of strikebreakers. They have used methods that have effectively been banned in Sweden since the 1930s.

Quite simply, it has not been a fair fight — because Tesla has not respected the rules of the game in the Swedish labour market.

IF Metall’s goal is for collective bargaining agreements to apply throughout the Swedish labour market. That goal remains unchanged. But Tesla is an entirely exceptional company. It is ideologically opposed to every form of trade union influence and has engaged in systematic strikebreaking since day one. It has devoted enormous financial resources to undermining the strike — and is able to withstand our extensive industrial action in a way that is completely different from other companies.

Our nearly three-year dispute with Tesla has put the value of collective bargaining agreements on the agenda, both nationally and internationally. In Sweden, support for our labour-market model — in which unions and employers negotiate and agree on working conditions — has proven to be deeply rooted.

The support from other trade unions, both in Sweden and abroad, has been unwavering. Their solidarity actions have been invaluable. Throughout the dispute, IF Metall has enjoyed strong support from the public and from many other parties in the labour market. Our striking members at Tesla are trade union heroes who have made major personal sacrifices over a long period of time.

IF Metall remains prepared to fight for collective bargaining agreements, wherever and whenever an employer or other counterpart may oppose them. The strike has demonstrated the strength and endurance of our union.
