In episode 4 of my Substack series “What I Miss and Don’t Miss about America” I discuss the torment of dealing with bad neighbors and the idea of privacy. As a New Yorker I was used to and tolerated noise, smells, trash, and people, everywhere. If I didn’t I wouldn’t have been able to live there for 18 years. New Yorkers live in a sort of fabricated harmony because there’s no physical or mental space to be overwhelmed. Everyone’s in the same boat. And you leave each other be. Not in LA. People in LA are fiending for human contact. They’re confined to their cars and their cozy little bubble at home. They’re quite isolated so take every chance to get involved, good or bad. My friends who moved from New York have all experienced the same issues with bad neighbors, some worse than others, as you will read. I have my own theories about why there’s such a lack of privacy.
