Do you believe in omens? After what happened to me in LA I don’t think I have a choice not to. This episode of my Substack series “What I Miss and Don’t Miss about America” reads like the introduction to a book I could write. It’s personal and yes, a little painful. But I’ve learned to find the silver lining in most crises of my life. I called this post The Wild, Wild West because it deals with crime, and I Don’t Miss it, at all.

A few more photos of my House Call with Evelien Joos 📷 If you read my newsletter a few weeks ago you will have learned the story behind the dog painting. It’s a fairly new purchase and fits in perfectly with Evelien’s vintage interior. First of all she got it at auction, “but no one else bid on it,” she said. So joke’s on them! Then she had to try 3 different cars to carry this monstrous frame home. I think it looks fantastic! And I can’t wait to see the next decor addition. (Tap to shop the cape top 👇🏼)

Well this is interesting…. Belgium vs USA. With both passports do I have to make a choice? And can I stay awake until 2 am?

On December 19th, 2019 I was naturalized as an American citizen. By that time I had been living in the US for just over 22 years. I had no idea what I was walking into. I thought I would be taking the oath in a wood paneled room in some insignificant court house in downtown LA with a dozen other people, but what I witnessed was a SEA of over 4000+ immigrants in a gigantic arena! And apparently these oath ceremonies are a daily occurrence!! More than 122 countries were represented, with Mexico at the top of the list. The atmosphere was solitary and celebratory - some people brought family waving flags and cheering, holding flowers and cakes 🥳 We listened to the speakers, sang the song, read the thing and watched a long, pre-recorded speech by DT about the “very, very special” assignment of being an American.
My main reason for becoming a citizen was to exercise my right to VOTE. After 22 years of paying taxes and working hard I thought it appropriate I should have my voice heard, and choose where I sent my hard-earned money. I had a talk about “the American dream” with a friend the other day. I am a prime example of the fact that it exists - or existed? - and is accessible to everyone, especially in New York. You don’t need a big diploma or tons of capital to make something of yourself. At that time I was at the height of my 4th business venture. I had been reinventing myself consistently, propelled by sheer ambition and persistence. Some might call it “luck” but I say it’s “opportunity” and there was plenty of that back then. I studied journalism in Belgium but became a name in the American fashion industry 🤷‍♀️ English was my 3rd language. I didn’t have a rich daddy. Careers were fluid. You said yes to everything and figured it out later, usually on the job. A positive attitude and openness went such a long way.
So on the 250th birthday of the United States I say cheers and thanks to all those opportunities! I’m doing my “very, very” best to keep my American spirit alive, despite my being miles away. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA, ya bunch of nutters!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I’m sooooo proud of my Smurf!! From being terrified of water because of a traumatic fall off a boat when he was a puppy to being a seasoned swimming buddy, he trusted his mama to help him overcome his fears. Now he doesn’t even need to be coaxed by a tennis ball to get in the sea and battle the waves, he just walks alongside me into the water deeper and deeper until none of our feet touch the ground underneath us and we just paddle around, to the left, to the right, in circles, he just swims next to me. I can’t describe the feeling this gives me. It’s beyond endearing. Smurf is not just my dog. He’s my miracle. ❤️

I’m so excited to announce that my book “Tales of Endearment” is now available .bxl in Brussels! If you love vintage you should definitely get your hands on a copy - only one left 😬 There’s so much to look at! I photographed, interviewed and profiled 60 interesting, colorful women and men who live and breathe vintage. You will recognize and so many more. For them it’s a life style and a daily choice to respect the planet and ignore fast fashion. The book is based on my old blog, launched in 2010, dedicated entirely to vintage, and how to shop, sell and wear it. At the time when I conceived my Tales vintage wasn’t the explosive business it has now become. I was the first and only blogger that highlighted its importance and benefits. Link in bio! (And if you can’t get it in Brussels, try or 📚

GO KNICKS!!! I was there in 1999. I watched all five games. My god, I loved basketball. It was such a high, even when they lost. My hero was Latrell Sprewell - what a beast! Check out his dunks! I still have his jersey - I bought a size 8 for boys lol. Like the 917 number I will never give up it’s a badge of honor. I wish I were in New York to feel the excitement - New York is on fire right now!! Crossing my fingers for KNICKS IN FIVE!! 🧡💙🧡💙🧡💙
